Adventure Rank Progression
Adventure Rank is Genshin's account-wide level, gated primarily by completing quests, exploring the map, and clearing story content — unlike character levels, AR can't be rushed through combat grinding alone since exploration and quest completion drive most of its growth.
The biggest single AR gains come from Archon Quests (the main story) and each region's Reputation system, plus one-time exploration rewards like fully revealing the map, opening Waypoints, and completing Domains and Shrines of Depths for the first time — a new player focused purely on the main story with light exploration will naturally climb AR far faster than one who ignores quests entirely and only fights enemies.
Character Leveling and Ascension
Individual character levels are capped by Ascension tiers, which require specific materials (often tied to weekly boss drops or regional specialties) — planning which characters to prioritize based on material availability matters more than trying to level everyone simultaneously.
Each Ascension phase requires a matching set: a regional specialty item (like Mondstadt's Windwheel Aster or Liyue's Cor Lapis), a common enemy-drop material scaling in rarity, Mora, and a boss-specific material from a Weekly or World Boss. Since weekly boss materials are capped by how many times you can claim rewards per week, planning your Ascension roster around which bosses you'll actually farm each week is more efficient than trying to fully ascend a large bench of characters at once.
Talent Books and Weekday Domains
Talent-leveling materials (Teachings/Guide/Philosophies-tier books) drop from specific Domains that rotate on a weekday schedule per region — most regions have their talent Domain available only on certain days (for example, alternating between two or three days per week rather than daily), which is one of the most common things new players miss.
Because of this weekday gating, planning which characters you're actively talent-leveling around your region's specific domain schedule (and using Fragile Resin or accumulated Resin efficiently on those specific open days) meaningfully speeds up getting a character's talents to a useful level compared to farming whichever domain happens to be open that day without a plan.
Resin Management
Resin caps how much Ascension material and Artifact farming you can do per day, making resin-efficient planning (spending it on your actual priority characters, not spreading thin) the single biggest lever on effective leveling speed.
Fragile Resin (obtained from the Battle Pass, events, and Adventure Rank rewards) instantly restores a chunk of Resin and should be stockpiled for double-reward event weekends or a focused farming push, rather than used the moment you get one — since Resin regenerates passively anyway, saving Fragile Resin for moments when it has outsized value is more efficient than using it reactively.
Daily Commissions and Weekly Bosses
Daily Commissions provide steady Primogems and materials with minimal time investment, while Weekly Bosses gate the higher-tier Ascension materials specific characters need — see our Genshin Impact F2P Progression Guide for how this ties into the wider account economy.
Weekly Boss materials specifically are capped by a limited number of resin-discounted claims per week (reset on Monday), meaning there's a hard ceiling on how many characters you can meaningfully Ascend past a certain tier in any given week regardless of how much time you spend — prioritizing which characters get those claims each week is a recurring decision worth planning in advance rather than reactively.
Spiral Abyss and Artifact Farming
The Spiral Abyss is Genshin's recurring combat challenge mode, resetting on a roughly two-week cycle with new floor conditions — clearing it fully grants a meaningful one-time Primogem reward each cycle and is widely used as a practical benchmark for whether your leveled roster is "endgame ready," rather than any specific Adventure Rank number.
Artifact farming (via Domains, same Resin economy as Ascension materials) is generally the slowest and most RNG-dependent part of long-term character progression, since a well-rolled artifact set can take considerably longer to acquire than simply leveling a character's numbers — most experienced players treat "good enough" artifacts as acceptable early and revisit optimization later, rather than blocking progression on perfect rolls.
Paid Progression Services
Paid AR-boosting and account services exist but carry real account-security risk given how tied Genshin accounts are to payment history. Check our vendor rankings and read the safety guide before considering this route.

Adventure Rank and Character Power Are Different Progression Tracks
Genshin Impact progression combines Adventure Rank with character levels, weapons, talents, artifacts, quests, exploration, and World Level. Spend Original Resin and upgrade materials on a focused team rather than raising every character evenly.
Judge Progress by the Next Meaningful Breakpoint
A useful session should unlock content, strengthen a dependable build, add resources with real utility, or improve a repeatable route. Reassess priorities after major gear upgrades, difficulty changes, seasonal updates, or market shifts instead of farming one activity indefinitely.
Genshin Progression Requires More Than Adventure Rank
Adventure Rank interacts with character levels, weapons, talents, artifacts, quests, exploration, and World Level. Spend Original Resin on a focused team and prioritize guaranteed upgrades before investing heavily in small artifact improvements.
Measure the Whole Progression Loop
Compare useful rewards after travel, setup, consumables, failures, market delays, inventory processing, and other friction. Reassess priorities after major equipment upgrades, new difficulty tiers, seasonal changes, or patches rather than following one route indefinitely.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I rush Adventure Rank through combat grinding?
No — AR is driven primarily by quest completion and exploration, not combat, so exploring the map, completing Domains/Shrines, and finishing story content matters more than grinding battles.
What limits how fast I can level characters?
Resin caps how much Ascension material and Artifact farming you can do per day, and Weekly Boss materials are additionally capped by a limited number of resin-discounted claims per week — both together set your real weekly progression ceiling.
Should I level all characters at once?
No — planning around material availability (especially weekly boss drops and each region's talent-domain weekday schedule) and prioritizing a smaller roster is generally more efficient than spreading resin thin across everyone.
Why is my region's talent domain not open today?
Most regions' talent-book Domains only open on specific weekdays rather than daily — check the current schedule for your region and plan your talent-leveling farming around those specific open days.
Should I save Fragile Resin or use it immediately?
Generally save it for double-reward event weekends or a focused farming push — since Resin regenerates passively over time anyway, using Fragile Resin reactively wastes its outsized value compared to timing it deliberately.
