How Trading Works in Diablo IV
- Market
- None (no auction house)
- Direct trade
- Yes, while partied
- No
- Seasonal and Eternal realms are separate economies.
- Many items become account-bound and can't be traded.
Gold and tradable items move only through the trade window when you're in the same party, so delivery means meeting the seller in game.
Whatever the method, a seller never needs your password or a 2FA code to deliver currency. Anyone who asks for them is asking for your account.

Diablo IV Gold: How Trading Works and Where the Risk Is
Diablo IV lets players trade gold and eligible items directly with each other, which makes its economy more open than many action RPGs — and gives real-money sellers a channel to exploit. Understanding the game's trading rules and its history with duplication exploits is the most useful thing you can do before spending money on gold.
How gold and trading work
Gold is Diablo IV's main currency. It is dropped by monsters, earned from selling items and events, and spent on upgrades, gambling for gear and crafting. Players can trade gold and certain items in person through the game's trade window, and the game restricts what can be traded and when: items you have equipped, quest items and some categories of items are not tradeable, and those restrictions have been adjusted across patches and seasons. Because the rules change with each season, confirm the current trading rules in-game rather than relying on an old guide.
Why gold sellers target Diablo IV
The game has seasonal resets, big gold sinks (enchanting, gambling, upgrades) and player-to-player trading, all of which create demand for large gold amounts. That demand is what real-money sellers serve. Our Diablo IV gold farming guide explains how players earn large gold amounts legitimately and how quickly the most efficient methods pay.
The 2023 duplication episode
The most useful case study is what happened in August 2023. Blizzard suspended player trading in Diablo IV after an exploit allowed characters to duplicate gold and items. Contemporary reports described billions of gold appearing on third-party trading sites for a few dollars, while in-game auctions for top gear rose into the billions. Blizzard said accounts using the exploit would face action under its license agreement, and separately said that players who unknowingly traded with an exploiter would not be punished. The lesson for buyers is that when a seller's gold is cheap, one plausible explanation is that the supply is not legitimate — and you cannot see where it came from.
What Blizzard's rules say
The Battle.net End User License Agreement prohibits selling, transferring or trading game accounts, items and currency for real money outside the game. Blizzard does not publish exactly what triggers an enforcement review. Some players have publicly shared account-closure notices citing the “unauthorized exchange of in-game property for real-world currency,” and at least one widely read account from a season-five player says the closure followed unusually large gold trades that the player described as legitimate. Treat individual accounts of this kind as anecdotes rather than proof of how enforcement works, but they show why unusual trading volumes can attract attention and why appeals are not guaranteed to succeed.
Safer ways to get gold and gear
- Farm efficiently. Our guide explains the highest-yield activities for each part of the season.
- Sell what you find. Tradeable rare and magic items can be sold to other players for gold within the game's trading rules.
- Build around what you have. Season power in Diablo IV often depends more on build choices and gameplay than on the size of a gold stash.
If you decide to buy from a third party
We can't make a purchase compliant with Blizzard's rules, and we do not encourage breaking them. To avoid the avoidable losses, never share your login or Battle.net credentials, be wary of prices far below the market, prefer payment methods with dispute rights, and keep records of your order. Our Diablo IV buying guide and safety guides go through the process step by step, and the vendors above are scored on delivery, support, pricing and trust.
