The Fractured Archive raid
- Old School's fourth raid opened October 20 at 11:00 UTC, in an ancient vault beneath Lumbridge. Entry needs the Grandmaster quest While Guthix Sleeps.
- Runs scale from 2 to 8 players (Jagex recommends 3 to 5) as a boss rush: eight encounters in the roster, five per clear, and Jagex bills it as the game's toughest raid yet.
- Rewards are tradeable uniques: the Ascension crossbows, Obligator, Zorya's Tome and the Rondache shield, plus the Zeal unlock and Elemental Fragments.
Brand-new tradeable raid uniques hit the Grand Exchange from day one, and the While Guthix Sleeps requirement plus raid gearing drives gold and raid-ready account demand. Next up: Hardcore Worlds on November 4, a fresh one-life economy.

How Trading Works in Old School RuneScape
- Market
- Grand Exchange (2% tax)
- Direct trade
- Yes, trade window
- No
- Free-to-play accounts need 20 hours played, 10 quest points and 100 total level to trade freely.
- Ironman accounts can't trade with other players.
There is no mail, so gold changes hands face to face in the trade window: you meet the seller in game on the same world.
Whatever the method, a seller never needs your password or a 2FA code to deliver currency. Anyone who asks for them is asking for your account.

Old School RuneScape Gold: Rules, Bonds and Real Risk
Gold pieces (GP) are the everyday currency of Old School RuneScape, and the Grand Exchange makes nearly everything tradeable at a visible price. That transparency is part of why the game's economy is so studied — and why buying GP with real money is treated so seriously. Here is how the system works and what Jagex says about it.
How GP moves
Almost all GP originates from monster drops, skilling output and player-run services, then circulates through the Grand Exchange, where players post buy and sell offers. Because supply is largely driven by players grinding, big content updates — a new raid, a new skill, a Leagues event — shift demand for gear and supplies quickly. Our OSRS gold farming guide lists current money-making methods by requirements and hourly yield.
Bonds: the sanctioned route
Jagex offers exactly one supported way to move between real money and GP: the bond. A bond is bought from Jagex for real-world money, and it can be redeemed for membership on the buyer's own account or traded to another player through the Grand Exchange. Because bonds can also be bought with in-game GP, they act as a price bridge between the two economies, and their Grand Exchange price floats with demand. As of recent reports, a bond costs roughly $10 from Jagex and has traded for around 12 million GP, but that rate changes and is worth checking in-game before you act.
The bond rate is usually less favorable than third-party GP prices. The difference is the risk premium.
What the rules say
Jagex's rules define real-world trading as buying or selling anything related to a Jagex account for real money or for anything of value, including gold, items, and paying someone to play your account. The same rules state that everything in the game, including the account itself, is owned by Jagex, and explain that gold sold by real-world traders is often obtained through botting or by taking over other players' accounts. Jagex says it may ban accounts involved with unofficial sites and services that support this flow.
In a news post on 16 September 2025, Jagex said it would take a harsher line on players caught buying gold, acknowledging that buyers had historically been penalized more leniently than sellers. The community-maintained OSRS Wiki summarizes the consequences: temporary or permanent bans without warning, and confiscation of illegitimately obtained goods.
Why buyers are now in scope
Jagex's own explanation of the 2025 change is worth reading closely. It says gold-selling bots exist because buyers give sellers a financial reason to flood the game with throwaway accounts, and that clamping down on the bots (the supply side) is not enough without also addressing the buyers (the demand side). That is why the penalties for buying have moved closer to the penalties for selling, and it is a reasonable guide to where enforcement is heading.
Ironman and mobile accounts
If you play an Ironman account, trading with other players is not possible at all, so gold purchases are irrelevant. On mobile and PC alike, the same rules apply and the same accounts are affected, so the platform doesn't change your exposure.
Alternatives to buying
- Bonds if you want the sanctioned real-money route.
- Efficient money-making methods matched to your levels — see the farming guide and the Currency Calculator for how they compare in dollar terms.
- Buying gear rather than gold through the Grand Exchange, paid for in GP you earn.
If you decide to buy anyway
We don't recommend it, and we can't remove the rules risk. The avoidable risks are scams and account theft: never provide your login or authenticator codes, be suspicious of any seller who needs your password, and read our OSRS buying guide and the RMT safety guides before you pay anyone.
