How Trading Works in World of Warcraft
- Market
- Auction House
- Direct trade
- Yes, trade window
- Yes, gold and items
- Starter Edition (trial) accounts can't trade, send mail or use the Auction House.
Gold can reach you face to face in the trade window, by in-game mail, or through an Auction House listing. None of these needs your login.
Whatever the method, a seller never needs your password or a 2FA code to deliver currency. Anyone who asks for them is asking for your account.

World of Warcraft Gold: What to Know Before You Buy
Gold is the backbone of World of Warcraft's economy: it pays for repairs, consumables, crafted gear, enchants, mounts, raid preparation and, increasingly, the Auction House prices of everything else. That makes it one of the most searched-for items in online gaming — and one of the most heavily policed. This guide explains how gold moves through the game, what Blizzard says about buying it, and what your realistic options are.
How gold flows through the game
Most gold enters WoW through quests, dungeon and raid drops sold to vendors or other players, profession output (crafting and gathering), and Auction House trading. Because so much of the economy is player-to-player, prices react quickly to patches, new seasons and raid tiers: when a consumable becomes mandatory for the highest difficulties, its price can double in a week. Understanding those cycles is often worth more than any single farming route, which is why our WoW gold farming guide spends as much time on market timing as on activities.
The one sanctioned way to turn money into gold: the WoW Token
Blizzard sells the WoW Token in its shop for a fixed real-money price — about $20 in the United States, with regional pricing elsewhere. A player who buys one can list it on the Auction House, where it sells for gold at a floating price set by supply and demand. The trade also works in reverse: a Token bought with gold can be redeemed for 30 days of game time or for Battle.net balance. Tokens are bound to the region where they were bought, so the US and EU run as separate markets. Price trackers reported the US Token trading around a quarter of a million gold in early September 2026, but the figure moves constantly, so always check the in-game price on the day.
The Token's exchange rate is usually less generous than what third-party sellers advertise. That gap is the price of certainty: it carries no rules risk and no account-security risk.
What Blizzard's rules say — and what has changed
Buying gold from a third-party seller violates World of Warcraft's end user license agreement. Blizzard has said publicly that gold obtained this way can be removed and that accounts involved can be permanently banned; the company repeated that warning in a 2025 account-safety notice reported by GameSpot. The tone has hardened further. In a September 2026 Q&A about WoW: Forever, senior designer Josh Greenfield said Blizzard plans to “very aggressively punish gold buyers” and admitted the studio has been too lenient in the past, according to Prima Games. Blizzard has also said it has no current plans to add WoW Tokens to WoW: Forever, which leaves purchased gold as the only real-money route there — and therefore the most exposed to enforcement.
The risks that are separate from the rules
- Where the gold came from. Sellers frequently source gold from bots, compromised accounts or fraudulent payments. When those source transactions are reversed, gold delivered to you can be removed after the fact, leaving you without the gold and without your money.
- Account theft. Some “power-leveling” and gold services ask for your login. Handing over credentials is how accounts are lost outright.
- Delivery scams. Fake marketplaces take payment and vanish, or deliver a fraction of the promised amount. Our guide on how to spot a fake marketplace covers the warning signs.
Ways to get gold without the risk
Beyond the Token, the safest sources are the ones Blizzard designs the game around: crafting and profession services advertised in the proper trade channels, selling farmed materials, Auction House flipping, and group content that pays in tradable loot. Our farming guide covers the current best methods, and the Currency Calculator shows how much an hour of each is worth.
If you still decide to buy from a third party
We can't make a purchase safe with respect to Blizzard's rules, and this page does not encourage breaking them. What we can do is help you avoid the avoidable losses: never share your account login, prefer sellers that use protected payment methods with dispute rights, keep your order confirmation, be wary of deals far cheaper than the market, and read the seller's refund terms before paying. The vendors listed above are scored on delivery, support, pricing and trust; the buying guide explains the steps in detail.
