What Grinding Gear Games Says
GGG’s trading policy is direct: buying and selling items or accounts for real money or external currencies is not allowed, and it will ban people who attempt it in game or on the forums. The examples it names include offering money for items or accounts, advertising external item sales sites, and running a service that sells items or accounts for anything other than Path of Exile items.
That wording matters because it covers the buyer, not just the seller. A purchase is an attempt to engage in real-money trading under the policy, and GGG has warned players detected trading items or progress for real money, per 2026 reporting. The penalty range runs from warnings to permanent bans, and microtransactions on a banned account are generally lost.
The Official Route: In-Game Trade
Path of Exile has no official currency seller. The official economy is player-to-player trade inside the game: currency items — Chaos Orbs, Divine Orbs, Exalted Orbs and the rest — are earned by playing and traded for other items through the in-game trade system and the official trade site. GGG’s own business is supporter packs, cosmetics and stash tabs, not currency.
That is also why currency has value: every orb in circulation was earned by someone playing. A seller offering large amounts cheaply is offering currency that, by the game’s design, took substantial play to earn — or did not.
What Can Go Wrong
- Account ban. The stated penalty for real-money trading is a ban, temporary or permanent, and GGG actively monitors trade patterns: large transfers between accounts with little shared play history are a named red flag.
- Bot and stolen supply. Third-party currency often comes from bot farms or compromised accounts, per the coverage of the ban. Buying it ties your account to that supply chain, and GGG’s detection does not distinguish a willing buyer from an unlucky one.
- Scams. Sellers who ask for your login, or who deliver by a method that leaves no record, can take payment without delivering — and a buyer who was breaking the rules has no publisher support to appeal to.
Red Flags to Avoid
- Requests for your Path of Exile login, email password or authenticator codes.
- Prices far below other sellers, which often means botted or stolen supply.
- Delivery by an account you must log into, rather than an in-game trade with your own character.
- Payment only by crypto, gift cards or bank transfer, with no dispute path.
If You Decide to Go Ahead
We can’t make a purchase allowed by GGG’s rules. If you still buy, use a marketplace with buyer protection, never share your login, pay with a method you can dispute, keep records, and take delivery by in-game trade to your own character. Our Path of Exile page lists the sellers we review with their scores.
Lower-Risk Alternatives
Earn currency by playing the trade game itself: farm maps, sell drops on the official trade site, and convert small currency upward. Our Path of Exile currency farming guide covers the earnable routes, and the leveling guide covers progression. Both are slower than buying and neither risks the account.
