The 2020 Rule Change
Wurm Online was unusual for an MMO: for years its developers tolerated players selling silver and items to each other for real money. That ended on March 1, 2020. As MMOs.com reported, Code Club announced the change in February 2020 as part of bringing the game to Steam, in a forum post titled “What to expect when you’re expecting the end of RMT”.
Under the new rules, trying to sell anything for money in in-game chat is prohibited, and posts elsewhere that offer real-money trades are removed. Code Club said: “We know this change may take some time to get used to but we do expect it to be followed.”
How It Is Enforced
Per MMOs.com, a first attempt to sell for money in chat gets a request to stop, and continued selling or promoting real-money trades leads to moderation. The official Discord market channel was reset on March 1, 2020, and older forum market threads were reviewed and could be rewritten to remove real-money offers.
What Can Go Wrong
- Moderation. Selling or arranging real-money trades in Wurm’s own channels is against the rules and leads to moderation after a warning.
- No support if a deal goes wrong. Because the trade itself breaks the rules, the developers won’t step in if a seller doesn’t deliver.
- Deeds and characters. Large deals often involve deeds or whole characters, which are the hardest to verify and the easiest to lose.
Red Flags to Avoid
- Sellers recruiting buyers through Wurm’s in-game chat, forums or Discord, which the rules forbid.
- Requests for your Wurm account login.
- Character or deed sales with no way to confirm who owns them.
- Payment only by crypto, gift cards or bank transfer.
