Bonds vs Cash: Spend the Permanent One First
Dead Rails has two money types. Cash is earned and spent inside a single run. Bonds persist across sessions and buy classes and starting items from the lobby, per the Dead Rails wiki. That persistence is the whole strategy: anything bought with Bonds that lasts is worth more than anything bought with Bonds that ends with the run.
Starting gear bought with Bonds is lost when a run ends. Classes are permanent. The wiki’s advice is explicit: buy classes before starting gear, because a class pays for itself on every future run while a rifle does not survive one.
Where Bonds Spawn
Bonds spawn as physical pickups across the map, most reliably in banks, which only appear in towns, and in high-risk locations: the Castle near the 40 km mark, Sterling’s bank and mines, Fort Constitution, and the Tesla Lab after its event, per the wiki. The Castle alone spawns 10 to 15 Bonds every run, and banks in towns are the most consistent single source.
The wiki’s farming note puts a full sweep of every point of interest at roughly 100 to 130 Bonds per game, and recommends playing solo or with players who do not need Bonds so the pickups are not split. Loot every town on the route; skipping towns is skipping the farm.
Challenges and Run Completions
The lobby Challenge Board pays Bonds for objectives completed during runs, up to 30 Bonds for a single challenge depending on difficulty, per the wiki. Weekly challenges pay once, but daily-style challenges refresh, so the board is a second income on top of looting. Check it before every run and route toward its objectives.
Completing a run also pays Bonds. Survival is therefore income: a run that ends early at a hard location pays less than a run that reaches Mexico, and a team that survives further earns more even after splitting pickups. Prioritise reaching the end over looting one more building.
What to Buy, in Order
Class prices from the update coverage run from 15 Bonds for the Doctor through 35 for the Cowboy, 50 for the High Roller, Conductor and Alamo, 75 for the Priest, Survivalist, Vampire and Zombie, to 100 for the Ironclad. Buy the cheapest useful class first: the Doctor at 15 Bonds improves every run immediately, and better runs earn Bonds faster.
After classes, trains are the other permanent purchase, and only then starting gear for a specific run. Bonds can also be bought with Robux — 5 Bonds for 49 Robux in the update coverage — which sets the cash value of the grind: a 100-Bond class is a long farm or a small purchase, and the guide’s job is to make the farm short.
Buying Progress Instead
Dead Rails accounts with Bonds balances and unlocked classes are sold on account marketplaces. A bought account carries the original-owner recovery risk covered in our account-buying guide, and the market record is on the Dead Rails page. Farming is the only route that cannot be taken back.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are Bonds in Dead Rails?
The persistent currency: Bonds carry between runs and buy classes, trains and starting items in the lobby. Cash, by contrast, resets every run.
Where is the best place to farm Bonds?
Banks in towns for consistency, and the Castle near the 40 km mark, which spawns 10 to 15 Bonds per run. A full point-of-interest sweep runs roughly 100 to 130 Bonds per game, per the wiki.
Should you buy classes or starting gear with Bonds?
Classes first. Classes are permanent; starting gear is lost when the run ends, per the wiki. Trains are the other permanent purchase.
