How Runes Work
Every enemy drops runes, and you spend them at a Site of Grace to level up or at merchants for gear and materials. Dying drops everything you are carrying at the spot you died, and you lose it for good if you die again before picking it up. That makes the safest farms the ones that are short and close to a Site of Grace, so you can rest, reset the enemies and spend.
Golden Runes, the item versions, are worth consuming only when you are ready to spend: GamesRadar+ points out that the glowing white skulls around the world break into Golden Runes worth 200 each, and enemies with glowing gold eyes drop more than normal.
Early Game: Stormgate Trolls
Before Margit and Godrick, GamesRadar+ suggests the trolls on the cliffs north of the Stormgate. Each one is worth about 1,000 runes. Pull them one at a time; they hit hard but are slow, and a few kills buy several early levels.
Mid Game: Castle Redmane and Windmill Village
War for Castle Redmane. From the Impassable Greatbridge Site of Grace in southern Caelid, ride up the hill and let the knights and dogs fight each other, then finish the survivors. GamesRadar+ puts a run at roughly 3,000 to 7,000 runes.
Windmill Village (Dominula). On the north coast of the Altus Plateau, the dancing villagers only attack when you get close. Clearing them pays about 7,000 runes in a few minutes, and they come back when you rest. The Godskin Apostle waits at the top, so stop before the boss arena unless you mean to fight it.
Late Game: Haligtree and Mohgwyn Palace
Haligtree backstabs. From the Prayer Room Site of Grace, take the north door and work along the parapets, backstabbing the knights and footsoldiers for 2,000 to 3,000 runes each. GamesRadar+ says a few minutes can reach 40,000 or more. Leave before the Cleanrot Knights and the Erdtree Avatar.
Mohgwyn Palace entrance. The best-known farm in the game. Ride up the canyon to the Site of Grace on the hill; the albinaurics on the slope are worth about 2,000 runes each, and GamesRadar+ measures the full loop at 40,000 runes every 2 to 3 minutes, reset by resting. The catch is access: you need the Pureblood Knight’s Medal from Varre’s questline.

Items That Boost Rune Income
- Golden Scarab talisman: a permanent rune boost while equipped, and the usual pick for any long farming session.
- Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot: a rare consumable that raises rune income for a short time. Save it for Mohgwyn or Haligtree runs, where the base payout is highest.
- Gold Leaves: a rare night-time weather event that GamesRadar+ says adds about 5% more runes while it lasts.
Stack the talisman and a Fowl Foot only on the farms with the largest base payout; a percentage boost on 1,000-rune trolls barely matters.
Where to Spend the Runes
Levels cost more runes each time, so later runes buy less. Fextralife and VideoGamer both list Vigor’s first soft cap at 40, after which each point adds noticeably less health; the 39-to-40 point adds 48 HP while 40-to-41 adds only 26. Buying Runes
Elden Ring has no official way to buy runes. Sellers drop them in multiplayer, which FromSoftware’s online rules do not sanction, and a farm like Mohgwyn produces the same amount in minutes once it is unlocked.
