Runes pay for weapon upgrades at the Blacksmith, armour upgrades, legendary enhancements and skill point resets, per GamesFuze. High-tier armour is the expensive part.
Chest Routes
High-level gold and silver chests are the best source. GamesFuze names Veilwater Basin, Cromville and the Eternal Lightning Temple, and says a 10 to 15 minute route can yield several thousand runes once you salvage the gear you do not need. Chests respawn on timers, so a set route beats reloading.
Salvage, Do Not Hoard
Salvaging unused Epic and especially Legendary gear returns far more runes than standard items. Duplicates you are keeping “just in case” are runes you are not spending.
Hollow Halls and High-Level Shroud
Elite enemies and minibosses in Hollow Halls and the high-level Shroud around the Kindlewastes and Veilwater drop salvageable gear. It is slower than a chest route but also pays XP and materials; see our leveling guide for the XP side.
World Difficulty
The World Difficulty settings can raise rune rewards, which GamesFuze suggests for multiplayer worlds where players share a rune economy.
Resources That Pay Twice
Sulfur, tin and copper give 10, 10 and 9 XP per unit (XGamingServer), so mining the Kindlewastes sulfur clusters feeds both your crafting and your level.
