Gold, not ISO-8, is the bottleneck. Every level-up charges Gold per ISO-8 piece applied, and every rank-up charges Gold again — so at 6★ and 7★ ranks, accounts drown in ISO and starve for Gold. Farm Gold like it is the main currency, because it is. Units are the other target: they cannot be transferred between accounts, so every free Unit in this guide is one you earn in place.
Kabam’s own support page lists the free Unit faucets: Summoner level-up rewards, Story and Event Quest completion and exploration, Quest Crystals and Arena Crystals, arena milestone rewards, the Daily Login Calendar, Daily Super Event rewards and Summoner Engagement rewards. The grindable core of that list is arenas — everything below is about running them efficiently.
Battle Chips & Arena Crystals: The Conversion Engine
Arena wins pay Battle Chips, and chips are spent on Arena Crystals whose drop rates Kabam publishes in game and the wiki records:
| Arena Crystal | Cost | Gold chance | Units chance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arena Crystal | 2,000 chips | 83.98% | 15.00% |
| Uncollected Arena Crystal | 10,000 chips | 83.98% | 15.00% |
| Thronebreaker Arena Crystal | 50,000 chips | Rates pending | Rates pending |
The Uncollected crystal (unlocked at the Uncollected title) carries the same percentages with contents scaled to five times the regular crystal’s amounts per hit; the remainder of each crystal is Energy Refills (0.35%) and Punisher (0.65% at 3★, 0.02% at 4★). What that means in practice: a long-running community tracker on the official forums measured arena crystal returns at roughly 1,642 Units per 1 million Battle Chips since March 2024 (about 1,916 before) — a community-measured figure, not a Kabam-published one, but the number grinders budget around. Open chips in the highest crystal tier your title unlocks.
Farming Gold
Beyond the crystal conversion, Gold has four steady faucets. Arena milestones pay Gold directly on top of chips and small Unit awards (the documented Catalyst Clash: Basic track pays 500, 1,000 and 1,500 Gold at its early milestones on the way to 2,000,000 points) — and champion arenas run on a twice-weekly rhythm, Round 1 starting Thursday and Round 2 Monday, so milestones reset and can be farmed every cycle. Incursions pay Gold in both reward tracks — Top Zone Rewards on first clears and Milestone Rewards — with higher Sectors gated by roster (Tier 1 accounts, holding 16+ 6-Stars, reach Sectors 6–7). The reworked Daily Quests keep an always-active resource quest (Gold and ISO-8) alongside Supply Runs Monday to Saturday and a richer Super Supply Run on Sundays. And the Free Crystal every four hours drops Gold (500/750) with potions and revives.
The overflow valve: excess ISO-8 sells for Gold at fixed per-piece values (T5 Basic 1,484; T6 Basic 4,949; T6 Class 8,750). Most players feed ISO instead — but if your stash is expiring while your Gold is empty, selling high-tier class ISO you have no matching champion for is real money, not waste.
Farming Units
Units come from the same arenas, one step removed: milestones pay small Unit amounts directly, and the chips convert at the 15% rate above — a full milestone run across the cycle’s arenas is the standard free player’s income. The arena structure per cycle is two 6★ Featured arenas with identical milestone and rank rewards, a 6★ Basic arena, and Summoner Trials (the merged 4★ basic). Around the grind: claim the Summoner’s Market’s free daily and weekly offers (the official web store runs free bundles and Market Point claims), keep the login calendar streak, and finish monthly Event Quest difficulties — Kabam confirms completion and exploration pay Units, though the monthly total varies with the quest and your difficulty mix, so no honest fixed figure exists.
Spend discipline matters as much as income. The documented first spend is mastery cores (Parry and Dexterity, covered in the leveling guide). Crystal prices show why titles come first: a Premium Hero Crystal is 100 Units, dropping to 60 at Uncollected; Grandmaster and Cavalier crystals run 200, discounted to 175 at Cavalier and Thronebreaker respectively. Units spent before those discounts exist are Units spent at the worst rate in the game.
Farming Catalysts & Rank-Up Materials
Catalysts gate rank-ups (the leveling guide has the per-rank recipes), and they farm from four places. Monthly Event Quest exploration at the top difficulty is the big one — one documented month’s exploration totals ran to 17,100 T6 Basic fragments, 13,500 T3 Alpha fragments, 4,500 T5 Class fragments and 28,500 T2 Alpha fragments, plus 6★ shards; amounts vary by month but the pattern (top difficulty = T6B/T3A fragments) is stable. Alliance Quest pays Glory, and the Glory Store sells catalyst fragments and rank-up materials — the main reason to be in an active alliance. Catalyst arenas rotate weekly (Catalyst Clash in Alpha, Basic and Class flavors; the Basic track’s milestones include T3/T4 Basic Catalysts), with 24-hour Sunday crystal arenas (Crystal Splash, Cornucopia, Trove) alongside. And the reworked Daily Quests include an always-active catalyst quest across tiers, with the Battlegrounds Radiance store as a further high-end source.
Buying Units & Accounts
There is no legitimate third-party Units market — Units cannot be transferred, so every “discount Units” offer is a stranger logging into your account, the exact mechanism behind Kabam’s 2018 bans. Buy Units in-game or at the official Summoner’s Market, and read How to Buy Marvel Contest of Champions Units Safely before touching any listing; sellers are compared on the Contest of Champions page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best way to farm Gold in MCoC?
The arena loop: Battle Chips convert through Arena Crystals, 83.98% of whose drops are Gold (five times the amounts per hit in the Uncollected crystal). Add arena milestones (which pay Gold directly and reset twice a week), Incursions’ two reward tracks, and the daily resource quest. Selling excess high-tier ISO-8 is the emergency valve.
How many Units do you get from 1 million Battle Chips?
A long-running community tracker on the official forums measured about 1,642 Units per 1 million Battle Chips since March 2024 (roughly 1,916 before that), from Arena Crystals’ 15% Units drop rate. That is a community-measured yield, not a Kabam guarantee — variance is real.
Can you buy Gold or Units from other players?
No. Neither currency can be transferred between accounts. Official Units are sold in-game and at Kabam’s Summoner’s Market web store; a third-party “Units” offer means login delivery onto your account, which Kabam’s Terms call an Unauthorized Transaction (§10) — and which drew bans in 2018.
Where do T6 Basic and T3 Alpha catalysts come from?
Primarily monthly Event Quest exploration at the top difficulty, which pays T6 Basic and T3 Alpha fragments in bulk (amounts vary by month). Alliance Quest Glory buys more in the Glory Store; catalyst arenas and the daily catalyst quest cover the lower tiers.
