Destiny Quests Are the Backbone

The Destiny Quests are Age of Conan's main storyline, running continuously from level 1 all the way to level 80 with major chapters unlocking at levels 20, 30, 50, 60 and 80. They're not optional flavor content — they deliver some of the best experience-to-effort in the game and tell the actual story of your character's rise, so treat them as your leveling spine with everything else (side questing, grinding, group content) filling the gaps between chapters.

The level 1-20 stretch happens entirely within Tortage and is essentially one long, uninterrupted Destiny Quest chapter — expect a genuinely story-heavy, almost single-player-feeling experience before the game opens up into its wider multiplayer world at 20.

Choosing an Archetype

Age of Conan's twelve classes split into four archetypes — Soldier, Priest, Rogue and Mage — and archetype choice matters for leveling speed, not just endgame role. Soldiers (like the heavily-armored Guardian) and certain Rogue builds tend to solo well thanks to strong self-sufficiency, while some archetypes lean more toward group content even while leveling. If solo leveling speed is your priority, research which specific class within your preferred archetype handles solo content well before committing, since the gap between classes within the same archetype can be significant.

Every class also has a general archetype feat tree plus two class-specific trees, and investing feat points sensibly as you level (rather than saving them all for a theoretical endgame respec) noticeably smooths out the leveling experience.

Tortage: Levels 1-20

Your first stretch of the game plays out entirely on Tortage Island, and it's worth taking seriously rather than rushing — early quests set you up with your starting gear upgrades, and the opening sequence includes hidden extras (a treasure chest near the sunken ship at the very start, for instance) worth grabbing on your way through. Sell anything you can't use to fund healing potions and basic gear, since Priests at this level don't out-heal a solid potion supply.

By the time you complete Tortage's Destiny Quest content, you'll be well into the teens or low twenties and ready for the wider world — this transition point is a natural checkpoint, not something to rush past.

Levels 20-60: Questing and Villas

Once you leave Tortage, the game opens into zones tied to your character's home nation, with quests carrying you roughly from 20 to 30 before the level-30 Destiny Quest chapter picks up. A common early mistake here is staying exclusively within your own nation's zones — Age of Conan doesn't restrict you the way faction-locked MMOs do, and venturing into other nations' leveling zones for fresh quest content is both viable and often necessary to keep pace.

Around level 40, mounts become available and meaningfully speed up travel-heavy leveling. From roughly level 50 onward, the four repeatable Villa instances in Tarantia Noble District — solo instances runnable every several hours — become a reliable supplemental experience source that scales with your level, worth mixing in with zone questing rather than relying on exclusively.

Levels 60-80: The Home Stretch

The final stretch shifts meaningfully toward grinding alongside questing — pure solo questing alone isn't enough to carry you from 60 to 80 the way it can earlier, and most players lean on a mix of Destiny Quest chapters, zone content in Thunder River, Atzel's Approach and eventually Kheshatta, plus deliberate monster grinding at known camps. A long-standing piece of community wisdom is worth repeating: don't over-rely on Villa grinding during this stretch specifically — save your Villa runs for when you genuinely need the boost, since burning through them constantly tends to make the grind feel worse, not faster.

If your account has accumulated any offline leveling credits, most veteran advice is to save them for this later stretch rather than spending them early, since they're proportionally more valuable saving you time at higher levels than at low ones.

Gearing Up Every 10-20 Levels

A commonly repeated piece of veteran advice is to reassess and upgrade your gear roughly every 10 to 20 levels rather than pushing through on outdated equipment. Age of Conan's combat is punishing enough that a meaningful gear gap slows down both questing and grinding noticeably, so budgeting some of your Gold and quest rewards specifically toward gear upgrades at these checkpoints keeps your leveling pace consistent rather than gradually grinding to a halt as content outpaces your equipment.

One word of caution: verify current pricing and terms directly with any service before purchasing, since availability and reputation shift over time in a game with as long a history as Age of Conan.

Paid Leveling Services

If you'd rather skip the grind entirely, paid leveling/boosting services can take a fresh character to max level in a day or two of real time. See our vendor rankings for boosting specialists, and weigh the account-action risk covered in our safety guide before buying.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Destiny Quests in Age of Conan?

The main storyline questline running from level 1 to 80, with major chapters at levels 20, 30, 50, 60 and 80. They deliver strong experience and should form the backbone of your leveling, with other content filling the gaps.

Does class choice affect leveling speed in Age of Conan?

Yes — some classes within each archetype solo much better than others. Research which specific class in your preferred archetype (Soldier, Priest, Rogue, Mage) handles solo content well before committing if leveling speed matters to you.

Can I quest in other nations' zones while leveling?

Yes — Age of Conan doesn't lock you to your character's home nation's content the way faction-based MMOs do. Venturing into other nations' zones for fresh quests is viable and often necessary to keep pace with the leveling curve.
