Age of Empires Mobile Leveling Guide: Town Center, Commanders & VIP

Leveling in Age of Empires Mobile is three ladders climbed at once: your Town Center — the central building of your citadel — your commanders, and your account’s VIP level. They gate each other: the Town Center caps your buildings and unlocks hero slots, hero levels cap troop capacity, and VIP decides how much stamina you have to earn hero experience with. This guide takes each ladder in turn, with caps as the sources document them.

What Actually Levels: Three Ladders, Honest Caps

Start with the documented ceilings, because other sites blur them. Town Center: level 30 is the maximum in the community Town Center table published by Theria Games, which lists every level from 1 to 30. Commanders (heroes): level 120 is the maximum, per the AoE Mobile Guides hero guide. VIP: there are currently 18 VIP levels, per the same fan site’s Empire Coins guide. Those three numbers — 30, 120 and 18 — are the whole shape of long-term progression.

A naming note: the game calls the central building the Town Center, and your city as a whole is your citadel. When players say “citadel level” they mean Town Center level — no other building can be upgraded past it, a rule every beginner source states the same way. And a sourcing note: no source in our research published a complete, verifiable Town Center upgrade-cost table (resources and time for all 30 levels) or a full hero EXP curve we would stake a guide on, so this guide gives you the milestones and mechanics, not invented cost rows.

Town Center Progression: The Rush to 17, Then 30

The Town Center table published by Theria Games shows why this building dominates planning: troop capacity rises with every level, from 100 at level 1 to 40,000 at level 30, and key buildings unlock along the way — the Hospital at 2, the Warehouse at 4, the Market at 6, the Embassy at 8 and the War Hall at 12. Each level also raises the maximum level of every other building, so a stalled Town Center quietly stalls your University research, your barracks and your resource buildings all at once.

Town Center levelWhat it unlocks or changes (community table)
12War Hall — and the second hero slot (2 heroes per march)
15Second gold mine; mid-game phase in community guides
17The third hero slot (3 heroes per march)
30Maximum level in the table — troop capacity 40,000

That is why community beginner guides converge on the same advice: rush Town Center 17 first, upgrading only the prerequisite buildings each level demands. The AoE Mobile Guides beginner guide gives the reason plainly — at Town Center 17 your march holds three heroes instead of one or two, which means more skills, more talents and a step-change in what the march can kill and carry. After 17, the climb to 30 is slower and more balanced, but the order does not change: Town Center first, prerequisites second, everything else with what is left. Alliance Help matters here — each help trims 1% off a building or research timer, per the same beginner guide, and over 30 levels of upgrades that is days saved.

Commander Leveling: Barbarians & XP Tomes

Heroes gain experience two ways, per the AoE Mobile Guides hero guide: defeating barbarians on the world map, and XP tomes (also called XP books in some guides). Every hero level pays out three things — attribute growth, talent points to spend in the talent tree, and unit capacity, which the fan site’s troop-capacity guide quantifies at 200 additional capacity per hero level. Capacity is why leveling is power: a higher-level commander simply brings more troops to every fight and carries more home from every gather.

Barbarian fighting is the repeatable engine, and it runs on stamina: every attack costs stamina, so your daily hero experience is effectively capped by how much stamina you generate. The BlueStacks leveling guide and the fan guides agree on the routine — spend stamina on the highest barbarians your march can reliably beat, every day, rather than saving it. XP tomes are the targeted shortcut: BlueStacks lists their sources as Island Tactics, events, the Alliance Treasury, the Wandering Merchant, quests and the Arena Shop, and advises saving tomes for your best heroes — the ones you will actually field in PvP — instead of spreading them across the roster.

Stacking Experience: Talents, Skills & the Level 120 Shape

The one experience multiplier every leveling source names is the Field Battle XP talent, found in the talent tree on the right side of Military Tactics Mastery. It adds 5% experience from defeating barbarians — and talent trees stack across the march, so with the talent on all three heroes in a march the bonus is 15%, per both the BlueStacks guide and AoE Mobile Guides. Take it early on your fighting trio; once heroes are maxed, community guides note you can reset talents and move the points into combat.

Know what the top of the ladder looks like before you climb it. At the level 120 cap, the fan hero guide counts 51 talent tree points to spend, and hero skills reach a maximum level of 40 — each hero has two fixed skills plus flexible skill slots, upgraded with skill points and skill scrolls earned from shops and events. The practical consequence: level a small core of heroes to high levels first. Three heroes at high level with full talents and levelled skills outperform a dozen mid-level heroes in every march that matters, and your tomes and stamina are finite.

What Levels Unlock: Troops, University & Research

City and hero levels express themselves through troops and research. Troop capacity comes from both ladders at once — Town Center levels and commander levels (200 per level, above) both feed it, per the fan troop-capacity guide — and higher-tier troops require the matching development behind them: community troop guides describe promotion through the barracks gated by University research and by sufficient Citadel (Town Center) level. Levelling only one side leaves the other as the bottleneck: a level 30 Town Center with level 40 commanders fields small marches, and maxed commanders in a low-level city cannot unlock the tiers to fill them.

Research pacing is the quiet third system. Beginner guides advise keeping the University at your Town Center level, prioritising the economy tree early — building speed, research speed and gathering speed — and rushing Deployable Troops research. Save general speedups for research rather than buildings, per the AoE Mobile Guides beginner guide: every point of research speed applies to everything after it.

Account Progression: The 18-Level VIP Track

VIP is the account-wide ladder, advanced with Empire Coins and VIP experience from play and purchases, and the fan Empire Coins guide counts 18 levels in total. Community guides agree on the two breakpoints worth planning around. VIP 8 grants a 5% research speed bonus — the fan guide calls it the first Empire Coin priority for exactly that reason — and Theria Games’ Empire Coins guide adds a 2% building speed boost arriving at VIP 5 on the way, with VIP 8 also raising the governor stamina limit, which feeds directly back into barbarian experience per day.

VIP 12 is the second breakpoint: fan guides describe daily free legendary skill scrolls at VIP 12 (one words them as legendary skill tokens — the naming varies, the daily legendary-skill reward is the consistent part). Beyond 12, the same guides treat VIP as something to let happen passively, because cost per level rises while bonuses flatten — and the fan spending guide states plainly that max VIP is not realistically reachable free-to-play. VIP is a progression track, not a farm.

Buying Boosting & Accounts

Leveling services and bought accounts are where this game’s rules bite hardest: the publisher’s EULA bans “leveling” services and account sales outright, and the game’s own FAQ repeats the account ban — the full section-by-section breakdown is in our Age of Empires Mobile buying guide. The legitimate money-in routes are top-ups to your own account: Midasbuy is the official store, and MMODude reviews SEAGM, Eneba and JollyMax top-ups plus G2G accounts on the Age of Empires Mobile page — accounts listed there carry the ban risk the buying guide documents. The faster legitimate route is the one above, paired with the resources farming guide that funds it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the max Town Center level in Age of Empires Mobile?

Level 30, in the community Town Center table published by Theria Games, which lists levels 1–30 with troop capacity rising from 100 to 40,000. The Town Center caps every other building’s level, unlocks the second hero slot at level 12 and the third at level 17.

What is the max hero level in Age of Empires Mobile?

Level 120, per the AoE Mobile Guides hero guide. At 120 a hero has 51 talent tree points to spend, skills can reach level 40, and each hero level on the way up added 200 troop capacity plus attribute growth and talent points.

How do you level up heroes fast?

Spend stamina defeating the highest barbarians your march can beat, every day, and put the Field Battle XP talent on all three heroes in the march for a stacked 15% experience bonus. Save XP tomes — earned from Island Tactics, events, the Alliance Treasury, the Wandering Merchant, quests and the Arena Shop — for your core fighting heroes.

Which VIP levels matter most?

Community guides point to VIP 8 and VIP 12. VIP 8 brings a 5% research speed bonus (with a 2% building speed boost at VIP 5 and a higher stamina limit), and VIP 12 adds daily free legendary skill scrolls.
