Two Ladders, Not One
Your account level is the outer gate: it rises to a cap of 100, unlocks story chapters and modes, and adds +1 to your stamina cap per level. Your Animus level is the inner one: characters gain levels from battle EXP and EXP items, but every character is hard-capped by their current star count, and raising the cap means ascending them with Shadowprints. Neither ladder substitutes for the other — a level-50 team still can’t enter a chapter your account level hasn’t unlocked.
Animus Level Caps by Star
Every Animus can reach 6 stars and level 50, but they start at different floors: R characters start at 2 stars, SR at 3 stars and SSR at 4 stars. The cap at each step:
| Ascension | Level cap |
|---|---|
| 2 stars | 30 |
| 3 stars | 35 |
| 4 stars | 40 |
| 5 stars | 45 |
| 6 stars | 50 |
You must actually reach the current cap before the game lets you ascend further, so leveling and ascension alternate all the way up. One cost warning from Prydwen’s progression guide: the higher a character’s ascension, the more EXP each level costs — an SSR starting at 4 stars is dramatically more expensive to raise than an SR, which is why full-SSR teams stall early accounts.
EXP: Investigation Records
Characters earn some EXP from battles they take part in, but the real leveling fuel is Investigation Records, farmed in the Investigation mode:
| Investigation Record | EXP |
|---|---|
| Primary | 200 |
| Intermediate | 1,000 |
| Advanced | 5,000 |
Prydwen’s stamina priority puts character EXP first in the early game — levels are the biggest single stat boost a character gets — but with a caveat: because battle EXP exists, don’t over-farm Records for characters you use constantly; they level themselves while farming everything else. Records are best spent catching up a new pull or a character you’ve just ascended into a higher cap. New Investigation stages unlock as you clear story chapters, so pushing the story raises your EXP income too.
Ascension: Shadowprints, Not Fodder
Etheria skips the fodder-feeding of older gacha games: ascension uses a single item family, Shadowprints, in four rarities — Blue, Purple, Orange and Red. The ladder runs in order: Blue Shadowprints take a character from 2 to 3 stars, Purple from 3 to 4, and so on up the rarity chain to 6 stars. Shadowprints come from shops, main story progression, events and various modes — they are a drip resource, so the real ascension decision is sequencing: ascend your carry to 6 stars first, then your sustain, and let bench characters wait at 4 or 5 stars rather than spreading Shadowprints evenly across a roster that mostly watches.
Prowess: Skills, Nodes and the Lattice Problem
Levels are only the base. Each Animus has 3 skills, and each skill carries a 12-node Prowess wheel: 8 stat nodes and 4 skill-upgrade nodes. The stat nodes are farmed — they cost Anima Imprints from the GP Outpost, and the imprint type depends on the character’s element, so GP Outpost is really five parallel farms. The upgrade nodes are the bottleneck: they require Lattice, split into SR and SSR rarities, obtainable only from some shops and events. Prydwen’s warning is blunt — SSR Lattice is the rarest resource in the game, even spenders can’t easily get more, so spend it only on your strongest, most-used characters.
Duplicates feed the other half of Prowess. A pulled dupe converts into Anima you feed back into the character: dupes 1 and 3 each raise HP, DEF and ATK by 5%, dupe 5 adds +10% damage dealt and −10% damage taken, and dupes 2 and 4 are character-specific stat boosts. Useful, but deliberately modest — this is why the beginner guides advise against chasing dupes over new characters.
Account Level: The Unlock Ladder
Account EXP comes from playing everything, and the unlocks are the point. From the progression guides: Arena and Infinity Train open at level 15, story Chapter 7 at 20 and Chapter 8 at 23, Ember Trek at 25 (the same level Threshold’s Nightmare difficulties open), and EtherNet Rally at 40. GP Outpost difficulties scale with you too — REA-07 at level 21, REA-10 at 28. Every account level also adds +1 stamina cap, so the leveling ladder literally enlarges your daily farm.
Sequencing advice that repeats across both Prydwen and HellHades: build a core of 4–5 Animus instead of a wide roster, level in DPS > healer > support order, and don’t be afraid of SR characters early — they cost fewer Records and Shadowprints to reach the same caps, and Prydwen confirms all endgame PvE is clearable with SR and free SSR characters. The free Lian is the exception to every “don’t invest in starters” instinct: the Hyperlink Charter’s Animus Training track literally pays you to build her.
Buying Leveling & Boosting
Piloted progression services exist for this game, but they run on handing over your account, and XD prohibits buying or selling currency and items outside the official channels — the full terms picture is in How to Buy Etheria: Restart Hydra Crystals Safely. The honest shortcut is the one in this guide: a focused core team ascends faster than a boosted wide one. Currency farming is covered in our Hydra Crystal farming guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the max Animus level in Etheria: Restart?
50, reachable only at 6 stars. The caps step up by ascension: 30 at 2 stars, 35 at 3, 40 at 4, 45 at 5 and 50 at 6 — and you must hit the current cap before ascending further.
How do you ascend a character?
With Shadowprints — no fodder characters are needed. Blue Shadowprints ascend 2→3 stars, Purple 3→4, and the Orange and Red rarities cover the final steps to 6 stars. They come from shops, story progression, events and modes.
What is the max account level?
100. Account level unlocks story chapters and modes (Arena at 15, Chapter 7 at 20, EtherNet Rally at 40, among others) and raises your stamina cap by 1 per level, to a maximum of 200.
What should you spend Lattice on?
Only the skill-upgrade nodes of your strongest, most-used characters. Lattice (especially SSR Lattice) is the rarest resource in the game — it comes only from certain shops and events, and even spenders cannot easily buy more.
