Two Kinds of Rank
Your character rank goes up with almost everything you do and unlocks weapons, tools and gear in the catalogue. Each role (Bounty Hunter, Trader, Collector, Moonshiner, Naturalist) has its own rank that only rises when you do that role’s work, and it unlocks that role’s upgrades and better payouts.
That split decides how you should spend your time. Early on, character rank matters most because it unlocks the tools you need to earn. Once you own a role, role rank is what raises your income.

Rank 10 is the first real target: the treasure chest gives a gold bar, which counts toward your first role licence.
Fastest XP
Shacknews tested the main options. Replaying story missions through On-Call is the most dependable: most take 5 to 30 minutes and give “100 to 300 experience in no time”, with slightly more XP for the honorable choice. Winning playlist matches (Showdown and races) pays around 500 XP per round for first place, so it is the fastest route if you win more often than you lose, and a slow one if you do not.
Everything else adds up in the background: hunting, skinning, crafting, cooking and Daily Challenges all give some XP, so a money routine levels you as well.
Leveling Your Roles
Role XP only comes from role work, so pick roles that overlap. Trader rank rises from hunting deliveries and sales; Moonshiner rank from brewing and selling; Bounty Hunter from bounties, with more for taking targets alive. Running Trader and Moonshiner together lets one role’s timer cover the other’s work (see our money and gold guide for the numbers).
A Simple Route From New Character to Your First Role
- Finish the opening story missions; they pay XP, cash and your first Gold Nuggets.
- Do Daily Challenges every day from day one to start the streak.
- Hunt for cash once you have the Varmint Rifle at rank 8, and replay story missions between hunting trips.
- Open the rank 10 treasure map for a guaranteed Gold Bar.
- Buy Bounty Hunter or Trader at 15 gold bars, then level that role while saving for the next one.
Rank Boosts and Modded Accounts
Sellers advertise rank boosts and modded accounts with high ranks and money. Both rely on breaking Rockstar’s rules, and modded money in particular can be removed long after you pay.
