Read This First: Two Ladders, Not One
Your armor, not your Attack level, gates the map. Regional Power Levels run from Brynmoor (1–2) through Ghornfell (3–4), Fellhollow (5) and Dowdun Reach (6) to Umbral Sands (7), with the Scorned Wilderness and Kuldra beyond. If a region is destroying you, the fix is a gear tier, not more combat grinding. Skills decide how fast you gather, craft and fight; gear decides where you are allowed to do it.
The XP table is shared: every skill reaches 99 at exactly 1,000,000 XP, and the climb is brutally back-loaded — level 50 costs about 4% of the total, and levels 93 to 99 alone cost more than levels 1 to 93 combined (657,432 XP in the final six). Plan like it: breadth first, depth where your build lives, 99s last.
Breakpoints Before Grinds
Several early unlocks accelerate every other skill, and the community leveling guides put them ahead of any long grind: Runecrafting to 8 and the combat/gathering breakpoints around 11 — Attack crits award double XP, Woodcutting gains its distance-chop spell at 11 and Mining its cluster detonation at 11, so one cast or swing clears what used to take several. Agility even levels passively as you sprint across the map. A first week spent collecting breakpoints makes the following months measurably faster.
There are no skill points and no respec to manage: skills level from use, in four families (Combat, Gathering, Artisan, Support), so train whatever the moment demands — the route you are farming is already a training method if you process what you gather.
Gear: The Real Level Gate
Treat each region’s tier as a level requirement wearing armor’s clothes. The ladder runs Mithril-tier (PL6), Adamant (PL7), then the 1.0 endgame: Rune armor, Black Dragonhide and Ancestral robes at PL8 — one set per combat style — and Dragon gear at PL9 from the Kuldra raid. Craft or buy the full set for your style before moving up; a single missing tier piece is the difference between farming a region and feeding it.
Patch 1.0.1 rounded the equipment picture out with dedicated ring and amulet slots and a bigger inventory (40 slots), and added combat texture — the Jump Attack and ranged special attacks — without moving the gate itself.
A Sensible Leveling Order
- Collect the utility breakpoints first: Runecrafting 8, then the level-11 unlocks in the gathering and combat skills you use daily.
- Keep armor current: one full set per region band, upgraded before you push into the next region, not after it hurts.
- Process everything you gather — the artisan XP is free progress riding on farming you were doing anyway.
- Pick the skills your build genuinely uses for the deep push; the 93–99 stretch costs more than everything before it, per skill.
- Aim a first character at PL8 (Rune-tier) competence: that is the Kuldra-ready foundation, and PL9 is earned inside the raid, not before it.
Buying Your Way Up
What money buys here is gear and materials, not levels: skills still level only from use. The verified item market — PlayerAuctions under escrow and IGGM as a direct shop, both delivering face-to-face in your world — is covered in our buying guide, and the farming routes that stock it are in the items farming guide. Frequently Asked Questions
How many skills are in Dragonwilds, and what is the cap?
Twelve playable skills, in Combat, Gathering, Artisan and Support families, each levelling from use to the traditional cap of 99 at 1,000,000 XP. A thirteenth, Prayer, is not in the game yet.
Why do I keep dying in a new region if my combat skills are high?
Because regions gate on Power Level, which your equipment sets — not on skill levels. Upgrade to the region’s armor tier first (the ladder runs to Rune/Black Dragonhide/Ancestral at PL8); skill grinding does not substitute for the missing tier.
What should I level first in Dragonwilds?
The breakpoints that speed up everything else: Runecrafting to 8 and the level-11 unlocks (Woodcutting’s distance chop, Mining’s cluster detonation, double-XP Attack crits), per the community leveling guides — then the skills your build actually uses.
How long does a 99 take in Dragonwilds?
Longer than the early levels suggest: the shared XP table is back-loaded, with level 50 at about 4% of the 1,000,000 XP total and the last six levels costing 657,432 XP — more than levels 1 to 93 combined.
