What Valve changed
The October 23, 2025 update to Counter-Strike 2 extended Trade Up Contracts to the rarest items. The patch notes, quoted by esports.gg, say: “It is now possible to exchange five Covert weapon skins to one knife.” StatTrak Covert inputs give a StatTrak knife, and the knife or gloves come from the collection of the skins used. Until then, knives and gloves could only be unboxed from cases or bought from other players.
The crash
Overnight, a new and much cheaper path to knives and gloves appeared. Outlook Respawn reported that the market, which had peaked at about $6 billion, fell to about $4.2 billion, with around $1.7 billion lost within 24 hours, citing PriceEmpire data. Some rare knives lost up to 43% of their value. Covert skins, now needed as trade-up inputs, went the other way, with some lower-tier items up as much as 67%. Esports.gg put the drop at around 30% over ten hours.
What it means for buyers
CS2 skins are an asset whose rules Valve can change in a single patch. Anyone holding expensive knives as a store of value learned that the hard way. Buy skins to use, not to hold, and compare marketplaces on the Counter-Strike 2 page before paying.
