What the Rules Say
Ubisoft’s position is documented in two places: the Growtopian Code, the game’s own rulebook, and Article 6 of Ubisoft’s Terms of Sale, which prohibits buying or selling in-game items and currency outside the official channels. Accounts are covered by the same framework — they are licensed, not owned, and transfers are not recognised.
This is not a paper rule. Growtopia’s history includes server rollbacks (VII through IX) in which duplicated items were removed and tainted lock stock frozen — enforcement that lands on whoever is holding the locks, buyer included.
The Official Route: Gems
Gems are the only real-money purchase Ubisoft makes: fixed in-app packs (Chest o’ Gems, Gem Fountain, It’s Rainin’ Gems, Gem Bounty, Gem Abundance), also sold as direct top-ups by GrowID through Codashop and SEAGM, which carry exactly the official denominations. Ubisoft publishes no partner list for Growtopia, but a seller delivering the official packs by GrowID is selling Ubisoft’s product, not player stock. A top-up should only ever need your GrowID — never your password.
What Can Go Wrong
- Rollback exposure. Locks bought with real money can be frozen or removed in a rollback if they trace to duplication exploits — and lock stock traces back through trades.
- Dupe cycles. Growtopia’s economy periodically floods with duplicated locks; prices crash and enforcement follows. Cheap locks are cheap for a reason.
- Account recovery. Traded Growtopia accounts stay tied to their creator’s email and GrowID history.
- Password phishing. “Top-up” offers that ask for your GrowID password are theft attempts; legitimate top-ups need the ID only.
Red Flags to Avoid
- Lock prices dramatically under the going rate — the signature of duped stock.
- Any seller asking for your GrowID password for a “top-up”.
- Sellers describing locks as an “official currency” — Ubisoft has never sold them.
Buying Checklist
- For Gems: use the official packs via in-game purchase, Codashop or SEAGM, GrowID only.
- For locks: understand you are buying prohibited stock with rollback risk, whatever the seller promises.
- Use marketplaces with escrow for lock or account trades, and never reuse your GrowID password anywhere.
- Check the current lock-to-Gem economy rates in game before trusting a seller’s exchange rate.
The Safe Alternatives
Buy Gems officially and earn locks in game — farming, trading items and events are the game’s intended economy, and locks earned that way carry no rollback taint. If you want a shortcut, Gem packs convert to tradeable items legitimately, which is the closest thing to a sanctioned fast lane Growtopia has.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are World Locks an official Growtopia currency?
No. Locks became the economy’s money by player adoption; Ubisoft sells Gems only. That is why lock listings carry rollback and dupe risk that Gem packs never do.
Can you buy Growtopia Gems safely?
Yes — through official in-app packs. Codashop and SEAGM sell those same packs by GrowID, which is the only third-party Gem route with a paper trail back to Ubisoft. Anything cheaper is not selling Gems; it is selling locks, items or an account.
What happens to locks bought before a rollback?
Rollbacks (the last were VII–IX in November 2020) restore the world state to a save point and freeze or delete duplicated stock. Bought locks caught in one can simply vanish, and neither Ubisoft nor the seller owes you a replacement.
Is buying Growtopia accounts allowed?
No — Ubisoft’s Terms of Sale restrict virtual goods to personal, non-transferable use, and the Growtopian Code prohibits real-money trading. Marketplace accounts trade anyway; the enforcement risk is the buyer’s.
