Plat, Planarite and Everything Else

Rift's economy is layered rather than single-currency: Platinum (often shortened to "plat," with silver and gold as smaller denominations) is the universal currency usable throughout the game and on the auction house, while Planarite is earned specifically from fighting rifts and planar invasions and spent on planar gear and upgrades. On top of these sit various event and seasonal currencies (like Chaos Motes or Auroral Doubloons during specific events) that only matter while their associated content is active.

The practical filter for a new or returning player: if a currency isn't connected to content you're currently doing, don't worry about farming it — Rift's currency list looks intimidating at a glance, but most of it is either universal Plat or narrowly scoped to a specific system you'll understand once you're actually engaging with it.

Free-Player Restrictions

Rift is free-to-play, but free accounts have real restrictions on the Gold economy specifically to limit farming and RMT: free players cannot sell on the auction house and are capped at 2,500 Platinum. Both restrictions lift once you make any Credits purchase, whether that's a direct purchase or converting in-game currency to Credits through the REX system. If Gold farming is a real goal for you, budget for eventually crossing that threshold rather than assuming a permanently free account will let you fully participate in the player economy.

Gathering Professions Pay for Themselves

Picking up all three gathering professions — Foraging, Mining and Butchering — lets you collect crafting materials naturally while questing, without dedicating separate farming sessions to it. Early in a fresh economy (or after a major content patch), raw materials are often worth more than crafted goods, since players are competing to buy materials for leveling their own crafting rather than buying finished items — so simply gathering as you go and selling the surplus can be a solid, close-to-passive Gold source.

This dynamic shifts as an economy matures and crafted goods start outpacing raw material value, so don't assume gathering will always outperform crafting — check current auction house prices for both before committing serious time to either.

Rifts and Invasions

Fighting the rifts and planar invasions that give the game its name is a core, repeatable source of both Plat and Planarite, and it scales naturally with whatever zone you're currently questing in — you don't need to go out of your way to find this content, since it spawns organically as you play. This makes rift-fighting one of the more efficient farming methods precisely because it doesn't require a dedicated session; it happens alongside normal leveling and questing.

Endgame: Colossi and Fragments

At the level cap, Rift's gearing system revolves around Planar Fragments, upgraded using both Plat and Planarite, with rarity increasing roughly every five upgrade levels. Farming Colossi in current endgame zones is a major source of both fragments and the currency needed to upgrade them — expect a lot of low-quality fragment drops that you'll want to recycle into elemental cores rather than trying to upgrade every single one you find.

Because Rift's power creep is deliberate (each new expansion obsoletes the previous tier's best gear), don't over-invest Plat into maxing out fragments right before a new expansion drops — check what's currently the best-value target rather than assuming last patch's endgame grind is still the priority.

Using the Auction House Effectively

Rift's auction house rewards players who track what's actually selling rather than listing everything at a guessed price. Crafting materials in particular swing in value based on which professions are currently popular on your shard, so checking recent sold prices before listing a large stack helps you price competitively instead of either underselling or having your listing sit unsold for days.

Since free accounts can't sell on the auction house at all, this method is really aimed at players who've already crossed the Credits threshold described above — if you're still on a restricted free account, direct vendor sales and gathering-profession income are your available options until you make that jump.

Because Rift has run continuously for over a decade with regular content updates, specific zone and currency recommendations can go stale between expansions. Cross-check anything specific against current patch notes or the CADRIFT community wiki before committing serious farming time to it.

Group farming also has real value in Rift beyond just faster rift and invasion clears — a coordinated group can tackle higher-tier planar invasions solo players would struggle with, and those higher-tier events generally scale their Plat and Planarite rewards up accordingly, making organized group farming sessions a legitimate step up from solo play once you have a reliable group to run with.
