Division 2 loot changes every season, and the numbers below belong to Year 8 Season 3, “Red Horizon,” released August 26, 2026. Ubisoft's Gamescom post says Season 4 will adjust Prototype Gear progression. Expect the specific percentages to be revised, and check the season notes before you plan a long farm.

This is a looting game with no tradeable currency, so farming means knowing which activity pays what. If you are new to the game, begin with our agent progression guide.

The Short Answer

For Year 8, Ubisoft's own numbers say the Dark Zone is where the loot is. Specifically, the new “Blackout” Dark Zone variant, which removes stat normalization, has the best drop rates for Exotic Components and Prototype gear, and a 20% to 25% chance for extra contaminated items. The rest of this guide shows the numbers and the conflicts between sources.

Red Horizon: The Published Numbers

Ubisoft's season page (Confirmed) lists these drop figures:

SourceChance
Dark Zone landmarks: contaminated cache20%
Blackout DZ: extra special Dark Zone item20%
Prototype gear from a normal enemy0.2%
Prototype gear from an elite0.5% to 0.7%
Prototype gear from a boss1% to 2%

Blackout also drops heroic-quality loot. The season introduced the Pressure Gauge, which fills from kills, headshots, multikills, skill eliminations and status effects, and powers three active modifiers: Fiery Aura, Vicarious Combustion, and Signed, Shield, Delivered.

What the PTS Notes Said

Ubisoft's separate test-server notes (Confirmed) list different numbers, and one set shows the Exotic Component chances that the live page does not:

Blackout DZ source (PTS)Exotic Component
Challenging landmark: Phoenix crates33%
Challenging landmark: bosses40%
Heroic landmark: Phoenix crates40%
Heroic landmark: bosses48%

The same PTS notes put Prototype drops at 0.5% for normal enemies, 1% for elites, and 1% (mid roll) or 2% (high roll) for bosses, plus a 25% chance for one additional contaminated item. Those are higher than the live page's 0.2%, 0.5% to 0.7% and 1% to 2%. We do not know which is live right now. The safe reading is that the PTS is the optimistic version and the release page is the one to plan against.

What we can say with confidence: Heroic landmarks beat Challenging ones, bosses beat crates for Exotic Components, and the Blackout zone is the focus of the season. The exact percentages are the part to verify in-game.

The Stretch Goal Caches

Ubisoft's August 11, 2026 update (Confirmed) opened an “Into the Dark” stretch goals track on August 18. Standard and Prestige caches offer exotics including Caduceus, Nemesis, Liberty and Chatterbox, and a group of twelve rare exotics including Eagle Bearer, Ravenous, Regulus and Bighorn. Gear sets in the pool include System Corruption, Yaahl Gear and Foundry Bulwark. Prestige caches guarantee vanity items and raise the exotic chance to 25%.

This is the most useful number in the whole update for an exotic-hunter: a 25% exotic chance from a cache is far better than a fraction of a percent from an enemy.

Broken Rain Incursion

The same update added the Broken Rain Incursion at Steel Creek Dam in Pennsylvania, where agents breach Rikers fortifications, kill the stronghold leaders and secure the dam. It carries one exclusive exotic, the Steel & Sons ACR rifle, with a stacking damage mechanic and separate PvE and PvP versions. The update also let Dark Zone drops come at Heroic quality, and gave elites and bosses a 25% chance to drop an extra item from a contaminated loot pool of high-value gear sets, legacy weapons and exotics.

Into The Dark Exotics

Season 2 launched on June 15, 2026. Ubisoft lists the Caduceus exotic assault rifle (critical hits repair you and allies for 3% of hit damage) and the Nurse's Kneepads exotic (40% hazard protection in a 10 m radius). A Master difficulty Climax Mission guarantees the Underboss exotic SMG, which is the rare case of a guaranteed drop. Its progression currency was Sample Cannisters, spent on High-Quality Munitions bonuses through a seasonal vendor.

Red Horizon Exotics and Events

New this season: the Iron Will exotic chest (“Resolved” makes your next body shot count as a headshot), the Fafnir exotic shotgun (Dragon's Breath shells with a 40% burn chance) and the Ember Engine gear set. Two classified assignments are listed: District Mall Inferno on August 27 and Georgetown Dead Zone on October 15. Ubisoft also listed a Retaliation Surge event from September 8 to 15 that doubles faction materials, and a Special Project chain from September 8 to 22 that rewards outfit tokens.

How to Spend a Session

  1. Open a Blackout Dark Zone at Heroic landmarks first. They have the best published exotic component numbers.
  2. Kill landmark bosses rather than only opening crates. The bosses had the higher chance in the PTS notes.
  3. Run the Master Climax Mission if you want the Underboss SMG, because it is guaranteed.
  4. Use Prestige caches when you are hunting for an exotic from the stretch-goal pool.
  5. Check Retaliation Surge dates before spending faction materials.

What Is Coming

Ubisoft's Gamescom post says Season 4 will reduce RNG in Prototype Gear progression, rework Escalation and bring back Black Tusk. It also says crossplay launches in November 2026, with leaderboards reset and clan size going from 50 to 100 members. Aroged reports the Echoes of Central Park expansion launches on November 3 (Reported). Because Season 4 targets Prototype odds, do not stockpile effort for gear whose farm may change.
