Read This First: Tanium Is Bought, Dark Crystals Are Earned
Dark Crystals cannot be traded or farmed off other players. They are account-bound: the only ways in are playing, events, or converting Tanium — which itself only comes from real-money purchases — at a 1:1 ratio. Anyone selling “farmed Dark Crystals” is selling access to an account, not a currency.
Per the Tower of Fantasy Wiki, Dark Crystals are exchanged in the store for items like Gold Nucleus and Red Nucleus to perform Special Orders. One Red Nucleus costs 150 Dark Crystals (The Click’s currency guide), which sets the exchange rate for everything in this guide: a 10-pull is 1,500 Dark Crystals, and every income figure below can be read as a fraction of a pull. The farming question is simply how fast the documented sources stack up.
The One-Time Bank: Story, Exploration, Achievements
The largest Dark Crystal income of a new account is one-time, and it is front-loaded into simply playing the game. Story and side quest completion, region unlocks and exploration milestones, and achievements all pay Dark Crystals as you clear them — the in-game Terminal’s Achievements, Chronicles and Story menus are the trackers for what you have and haven’t collected.
Exploration pays in two currencies at once. Scenic points pay 20 Dark Crystals each (GameSkinny counts 23 scenic locations in the launch regions, worth 460 Dark Crystals in total), while supply pods, chests and bounty missions scatter the Black Nucleus and Gold Nucleus used on the permanent banners — world exploration is a listed source for both. Small first-time payouts hide everywhere too: the wiki’s own screenshots show 10 Dark Crystals for a first photo-mode save and 10 more for a first Training Center weapon trial. None of this respawns, so treat the bank as your reroll-and-first-banner fund, not an income.
The Weekly Engine: 520–570 Renewable Dark Crystals
Once the bank is drained, income settles into a documented weekly routine. GameSkinny and Games Fuze itemise the same components:
| Weekly source | Dark Crystals |
|---|---|
| Weekly activity rewards (at 300 / 600 / 900 activity) | 100 + 100 + 150 = 350 |
| 7-day sign-in (day 5) | 20 |
| Crew weekly salary — Crewmate / Cadre / Deputy & Commander | 100 / 120 / 150 |
| Weekly crew missions | 50 |
| Total per week | 520 (Crewmate) to 570 (Commander) |
The 350 from weekly activity is the backbone and the part under your control: the wiki’s Activity Missions page shows the Dark Crystal chests sitting at the 300, 600 and 900 activity tiers, fed by daily missions such as clearing a Joint Operation or a Challenged raid. Crew income is why even a casual crew membership matters — the salary scales with your crew rank, and Games Fuze’s accounting puts the renewable total at 2,080 Dark Crystals a month for a Crewmate and 2,280 for a Commander.
Two monthly extras sit on top. Games Fuze credits the free track of the Merit Pass (the battle pass) with 150 Dark Crystals, and Apex League’s top Grand Marshal rank with 500 Dark Crystals a season, with duplicate vehicle/cosmetic rewards converting at 100 each. PvP income is real but rank-gated; the activity-and-crew core is not.
Events: The Swing Income
Limited-time events are the largest variable source. Event shops, event missions and campaign login calendars regularly pay Dark Crystals and outright nuclei, and version updates have bundled login packages of free Red Nuclei plus Dark Crystals for cumulative logins — The Click’s guide calls events one of the best opportunities to earn large amounts quickly. Maintenance compensation and promotional codes add irregular top-ups on top.
The F2P discipline this creates: because event income arrives in lumps tied to specific banners, the players who guarantee the weapons they want are the ones who treat event Dark Crystals as savings, not as permission to pull. A banner you skip is worth roughly its whole event package banked toward the next one.
The Spending Math: Pity, Flame Gold and Black Gold
Weapon Special Orders guarantee an SSR on the 80th pull, and on limited banners that SSR has a 50% chance to be the featured weapon; unspent pity progress carries over to the next limited banner rather than expiring. At 150 Dark Crystals per Red Nucleus, the 80-pull pity is a 12,000-Dark-Crystal worst case for an SSR — not necessarily the featured one.
The hard guarantee is the token system. Every limited-banner pull also earns 1 Flame Gold, and 120 Flame Gold buys the featured weapon outright in the Limited Orders Store — a 120-pull, 18,000-Dark-Crystal ceiling that removes the coin flip entirely. Leftover Flame Gold converts 1:1 into Black Gold when the banner ends, so a failed chase is not a total loss. Black Gold itself drops one per pull on the permanent Gold Nucleus banner and buys standard weapons and upgrade materials in the Weapon Store, per the wiki.
Matrix banners run tighter numbers: an SSR Matrix is guaranteed every 40 pulls, and a featured Matrix piece costs 80 Overclocking Chips in the Limited Orders Store (both per the wiki’s store documentation). Two habits protect a free account: never convert Dark Crystals into Gold (Gold is far easier to earn than its Dark Crystal price suggests), and don’t buy Gold Nucleus early — the world is full of them from exploration.
The Weekly Routine
- Cap weekly activity at 900 — the 350 Dark Crystals sit at the 300/600/900 tiers; daily activity missions (a Joint Operation clear, a Challenged raid clear) are the fast fillers.
- Claim the day-5 sign-in (20) and finish the weekly crew missions (50) — small numbers that are pure loss if missed.
- Stay in a crew, and climb its ranks — the weekly salary rises from 100 to 150 Dark Crystals between Crewmate and Commander.
- Clear event shops and login calendars first — event income is the swing source and it expires.
- Spend only on Red Nucleus for banners you’ve planned — 150 Dark Crystals a pull, 12,000 to the SSR pity, 18,000 to the Flame Gold guarantee.
Buying Tanium & Accounts
Because Dark Crystals can’t move between accounts, the third-party market for this game is Tanium top-ups and whole accounts. A legitimate top-up should only ever need your UID and server — never your password; the official route is the in-game shop or the PlayStation Store. MMODude has not published a standalone buying guide for Tower of Fantasy yet; the reviewed Tanium sellers and account marketplaces, with the delivery details that matter, are compared on the Tower of Fantasy page. Leveling systems — Dimension Levels, weapon enhancement and matrices — are covered in our Tower of Fantasy leveling guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Dark Crystals can you earn per week in Tower of Fantasy?
The documented renewable sources total 520 per week for a crew Crewmate and 570 for a Commander: 350 from weekly activity tiers, 20 from the day-5 sign-in, 100–150 crew salary by rank, and 50 from weekly crew missions (itemised by GameSkinny and Games Fuze). The Merit Pass free track (150/month) and Apex League rewards sit on top, and events add irregular lump sums.
How many Dark Crystals does a limited weapon cost?
A Red Nucleus costs 150 Dark Crystals. The 80-pull SSR pity is therefore 12,000 Dark Crystals — but the SSR is only a 50% chance to be the featured weapon. The hard guarantee is 120 Flame Gold (one per pull) exchanged for the featured weapon in the Limited Orders Store: 120 pulls, or 18,000 Dark Crystals, worst case.
What is the difference between Tanium and Dark Crystals?
Tanium is the paid currency: it can only be obtained through in-game purchases, per the wiki. Dark Crystals are the earnable twin — they drop from story, exploration, achievements, weekly activity, crews and events. Tanium converts to Dark Crystals at 1:1 and both spend in the same store.
What should free players spend Dark Crystals on?
Red Nucleus for limited banners you have planned around, saved against the pity numbers above. Don’t convert Dark Crystals into Gold (Gold is much easier to earn directly), and don’t buy Gold Nucleus early — exploration and bounties hand them out while you clear the map.
