Sony Online Entertainment shut down Star Wars Galaxies on December 15, 2011. The SWGEmu project reverse-engineered the original server software so the community could keep the game alive, and multiple servers have grown from that codebase since — each recreating a different era of the game's history, from the original Pre-CU sandbox to the later NGE version.

MMODude found no report of a full wipe on SWGEmu's servers. The project has instead launched new servers alongside existing ones as it reached new development milestones (for example, the Finalizer server launched in 2021) rather than resetting an existing world.
