Reaching level 30 takes 1,395 XP in total. Because each level costs more than the last, a single level near 40 costs far more than one near 10, so spend levels as you get them rather than hoarding hundreds.
Enchanting at Level 30
The enchanting table’s best offers need level 30. Keep enough bookshelves around the table for the top offers, enchant, and you can earn the spent levels back quickly because the early levels are the cheap ones.
The Anvil Limit
The Minecraft Wiki notes that anvils accept jobs costing up to level 39 in Survival; Creative removes the limit. Combining books onto gear in a sensible order keeps repeated repairs under that cap.
Where Levels Come From
- Hostile mobs, more than passive ones: a zombie gives 5 plus 1 to 3 per piece of equipment, a Piglin Brute 20 plus 1 to 3, the Wither 50.
- Monster spawners: 15 to 43 XP when broken.
- Ores: diamond and emerald 3 to 7, lapis and quartz 2 to 5, redstone 1 to 5.
- Trading, breeding, fishing and bottles o’ enchanting (3 to 11 each).
- Java advancements: some challenge advancements pay 40 to 1,000 XP.
