Monster Hunter Now Leveling Guide: Hunter Rank, HRP & Gear Grades

Monster Hunter Now separates the two things most games merge. Hunter Rank is your account level: it unlocks systems and harder hunts but adds no stats. Gear grades are your power: a weapon’s grade and level decide what you can kill. Players stall by grinding the first and starving the second. This guide covers both ladders with the published HRP numbers, and the unlock ranks that sequence the whole game.

Read This First: Rank Unlocks, Gear Kills

Hunter Rank does not make your hunter stronger — it makes the game bigger. Polygon’s rank guide describes HR as an at-a-glance progression tracker that pays consumables such as Paintballs and unlocks core features, while the main quest expands your monster list and weapon types. Power lives in the forge. Any “HR boosting” service is therefore selling unlocks without the gear to use them — and it needs your account login besides; see our buying guide.

Rank advances on Hunter Rank Points (HRP), and the sources agree on the three taps: the main quest, daily (Special) quests, and defeating large monsters. The unlocks arrive early and matter: upgrading equipment from HR4, forging from HR6 (Niantic help), and at HR11 the daily quests and HRP from hunts fully open, Zenny milestone rewards begin, part-breaking becomes possible, and overgrading unlocks (Gameranx). HR11 is the game’s real starting line.

Where HRP Comes From: The Numbers

HRP source (Polygon / Dexerto)HRPNotes
Main quest steps50 to 150Early-game range; also unlocks monsters, weapons and mechanics
Daily (Special) quests200 eachMaximum three per day — the best HRP per minute in the game; unlock at HR11
Large monsters10 (1-star) to 100 (6-star)20 / 40 / 60 / 80 for 2- to 5-star; small monsters pay no HRP

The arithmetic dictates the routine: three dailies are worth six 6-star monsters, so dailies first, main quest always in progress, and hunts chosen for materials (per the farming guide) with their HRP as a by-product. Dexerto adds the small-monster warning: only large monsters pay HRP, so clearing the small fry is map hygiene, not leveling. Story quests also meter out the monster roster itself — a new species is new gear, which is progression the HR number only summarises.

Gear Grades: Five Levels, Then Overgrade

Niantic’s help pages give the ladder its exact shape. Equipment is forged from monster materials (a first defeat typically makes that monster’s set forgeable — its example: the first Paolumu opens the Lumu set at Grade 2), then upgraded five levels within its grade using materials, gathered resources and Zenny. At level 5 of a grade, overgrading — available from HR11 — raises the piece to the next grade, and the cycle repeats, currently to Grade 10. Equipment skills arrive as grades rise: weapons carry one skill, armour pieces up to two, and every weapon gains its Special Skill at Grade 2 in Gameranx’s account.

The building discipline follows from the costs: grades are where Zenny and rare materials concentrate, so commit to a small number of weapons (one per element you actually hunt) and a core armour set, and grade those deeply rather than forging widely. A Grade 7 weapon with the right element outperforms a shelf of Grade 4s against the 7- and 8-star hunts HR eventually unlocks — and those high-star hunts are where the HRP and material tables both pay their best numbers.

A Daily Rank-and-Gear Routine

Buying Rank & Gear

Neither rank nor gear can be bought, gifted or transferred in Monster Hunter Now. Paid Gems accelerate comfort — potions, reward doubles, storage — and are assessed in our buying guide; account sales and piloted HR services breach Niantic’s terms and deliver, at best, unlocks without the forged gear that makes them playable. See the Monster Hunter Now page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you raise Hunter Rank fast in Monster Hunter Now?

Do the three daily (Special) quests every day — 200 HRP each, the best rate in the game — keep the main quest moving (50 to 150 HRP per step plus unlocks), and take large monsters for 10 to 100 HRP by star as the third source (Polygon; Dexerto). Small monsters pay no HRP.

What unlocks at HR11?

In the sources checked: daily quests and full HRP gain, the 1,000-Zenny milestone rewards every 10 ranks, part-breaking, and overgrading — the grade-raising system. HR4 unlocks upgrading and HR6 forging (Niantic help).

How do gear grades work?

Forge a piece from monster materials, upgrade it five levels within its grade using materials and Zenny, then overgrade it into the next grade (from HR11), up to Grade 10 (Niantic help). Higher grades add equipment skills; weapons gain their Special Skill at Grade 2.

Does Hunter Rank increase my stats?

No. Rank unlocks features, monsters and rewards; your damage and defence come entirely from gear grades and levels. That is why this guide sequences the forge ahead of rank grinding.
