The warning
GameSpot reported on August 1, 2025 that WoW community manager Kaivax had posted a warning on the official forums. “Purchasing gold from other players puts your account at risk of being hacked,” the post said, and it supports account thieves, bots and economy disruption. Gold should only be accepted from known players or through crafting agreements, and “the only safe way to purchase gold is via the WoW Token.”
Buying gold from third parties breaks the WoW end user license agreement, and Blizzard can remove the gold or permanently ban the account.
The reaction
Many players read the post as an advert for the Token, which Blizzard sells for $20 and players resell on the auction house for gold, reopening the old pay-to-win argument. Others noted the Token is not offered in some regions, such as Brazil, or in some Classic versions, which leaves them without the “safe” option.
What it means for buyers
