Know Before You Buy
Trading rules, season dates and the latest patch for Elder Scrolls Online, from the publisher’s own statements.
Echoes of Skyrim
- Season Two: Echoes of Skyrim launched October 21 on all platforms and runs to January 27, 2027: new Eastern Skyrim content and solo versions of the March of Sacrifices and Moon Hunter Keep dungeons.
- On October 19 the Greymoor chapter and Wolfhunter DLC moved into the base game free for everyone — Western Skyrim, the Antiquities system, both dungeons and the Kyne’s Aegis trial included; the Markarth DLC follows later in the season.
- A new Tamriel Tome reward track launched with the season, and the Witches Festival runs October 21 to November 4.
Two formerly paid DLCs becoming free changes what an ESO account is worth: accounts priced partly on Greymoor or Wolfhunter ownership just lost that premium. The Witches Festival window (to November 4) is the seasonal spike for event motifs and Plunder Skull farming, and the new Tome gives boosting sellers a fresh, time-boxed track to sell progress on.

- Each platform and megaserver (NA, EU) is a separate economy.
Gold reaches you face to face in the trade window, by mail, or through a guild store listing.
Whatever the method, a seller never needs your password or a 2FA code to deliver currency. Anyone who asks for them is asking for your account.

Elder Scrolls Online Gold: What ZeniMax Allows and Prohibits
Elder Scrolls Online has one of the more unusual gold economies among MMOs: ZeniMax publicly treats Crown Store items as ordinary in-game items, which players can trade for gold, while prohibiting any exchange of in-game things for real money. Knowing exactly where that line sits is the most useful thing you can learn before buying gold.
How gold works in ESO
Gold comes from quests, dungeons and trials, selling gear and crafted goods to players and vendors, and writs and crafting. It pays for housing, motifs, mounts and crafted equipment, and the guild trader system means most valuable goods are bought from other players. Our ESO gold farming guide covers the best current earners and how they scale with your progression.
The line ZeniMax has drawn
ZeniMax's Terms of Service state that it prohibits, and does not recognize, any purported transfers, sales, gifts or trades of virtual currency. On the community side, an official ESO community manager has clarified in the game's forums that trading an in-game item for other in-game items is allowed, that Crown Store items count as in-game items, and that trading in-game items for real-world money or other out-of-game items is strictly prohibited. In practice that means players may exchange gold for a Crown Store gift (a legitimate way to buy Crown Store content with gold), but any deal paid in real money, whether for gold, crowns or items, is outside the rules.
How the crown-for-gold market works, and why it's restricted
Because Crowns cannot be transferred directly, the player selling them gifts an item from the Crown Store to the buyer, and the buyer pays in gold. Players report that ZeniMax restricted who can send Crown Store gifts at one point because the system was being abused for real-money trading, and that gifting must be enabled through customer support for some accounts. The arrangement can change, and only the parts that involve in-game goods on both sides are permitted.
What third-party gold means in this context
Buying gold with real money from an outside seller falls on the prohibited side. Community members regularly warn that gold sold this way is typically produced by bots or taken from compromised accounts, and that ZeniMax logs in-game transactions. As with any publisher, the studio does not publish the details of how it detects RMT.
Scam patterns specific to the Crown gold market
- Going first. In a Crown-for-gold deal, the party who sends first carries the risk. Trade guilds and community exchange servers offer middleman services that hold the gold until the item arrives.
- Chargebacks. Players report that ZeniMax has taken action on accounts involved in Crown purchases that were later charged back. If you ever buy Crowns, use a payment you will not dispute.
- Look-alike sites. Any site that asks for your ESO login to “deliver” gold is trying to take the account.
Safer ways to get gold
- Sell crafted goods and materials through guild traders — consistent demand for consumables and furnishings supports steady income.
- Use the Crown-for-gold exchange properly if you have Crowns: sell for gold, not for cash, and use a middleman.
- Run efficient repeatable content. Our Currency Calculator converts hourly gold into a dollar value so you can compare activities.
If you decide to buy from a third party
We cannot make a purchase compliant with ZeniMax's terms, and this page does not encourage breaking them. If you go ahead, the avoidable risks are scams and account theft: never share your login, choose sellers with a verifiable track record, use payment methods with dispute rights, and keep records. See our ESO buying guide and the safety guides. The vendors above are scored on delivery, support, pricing and trust.
