How Trading Works in Guild Wars 2
- Market
- Black Lion Trading Post
- Direct trade
- No trade window
- Yes, with limits
- An account can receive at most 500 gold a week through mail and the guild vault.
- Free accounts can't send coin by mail; new accounts are limited for their first 30 days.
Large amounts can only arrive through the Trading Post, because mail and the guild vault are capped at 500 gold a week.
Whatever the method, a seller never needs your password or a 2FA code to deliver currency. Anyone who asks for them is asking for your account.

Guild Wars 2 Gold: The Gem Exchange and ArenaNet's RMT Policy
Guild Wars 2 has an official, built-in way to turn real money into gold, and ArenaNet publishes unusually detailed support articles on what it does about third-party gold sellers. Both are worth reading before you consider any outside source.
How gold moves
Gold comes from open-world events, dungeons, fractals, raids and strike missions, crafting, and the Trading Post, where players buy and sell items for each other. Because so much is player-driven, prices follow patches and content releases. Our GW2 gold farming guide covers current methods.
The sanctioned route: gems to gold
ArenaNet's support policy points players who are short on gold to official channels: buy gems in the in-game Gem Store (or with a gem card from an authorized retailer) and convert them to gold through the currency exchange. That is the supported way to turn money into gold. ArenaNet also says selling and buying “runs” — paying someone to carry you through content for items or gold — is completely acceptable, though it warns of the risks that come with such services.
What ArenaNet says about real money traders
Its support article states that purchasing from a real money trader is against the Rules of Conduct. It explains that RMT gold comes mostly from hacked or stolen accounts, or from stolen credit card information used to buy gems and convert them to gold, and that buyers may unknowingly put their own account and credit information at risk. ArenaNet says its game surveillance team works to suspend compromised accounts. A separate policy on runs says that if ArenaNet investigates an exchange and establishes that funds originated from fraud or RMT, it will take action against all parties involved — from removal of funds to suspension or termination.
Accidentally receiving gold
Because scammers have tried to get players banned by sending them purchased gold, ArenaNet has clarified its stance: players who do not accept such gold, return it and report it to support are not at risk of a ban, and accidentally accepting it does not initially lead to a ban, though the gold is removed from the account. If gold arrives unexpectedly, do not spend it — return it and contact support.
Practical risks
- Chargeback chains. Gold made from fraudulent gem purchases can be traced and removed when the originating payment is reversed.
- Credential theft. RMT operations target accounts without strong passwords or authentication.
- Tracking. ArenaNet says its surveillance team uses queries that track RMT actions to find compromised accounts and suspicious transfers.
Ways to get gold safely
Use the gem exchange if you want to spend money, or earn through repeatable content and the Trading Post. Our Currency Calculator converts hourly gold into a dollar figure, and the leveling guide covers early progression.
If you decide to buy from a third party
We cannot make a purchase compliant with ArenaNet's rules, and we don't encourage breaking them. If you go ahead, enable two-factor authentication, never share your login, use a payment with dispute rights and read our GW2 buying guide and safety guides.
