Star Citizen aUEC: Alpha Currency, Wipes and Cloud Imperium's Rules
Star Citizen is still in alpha, and its in-game currency, aUEC, is a test currency that can be reset. That single fact changes the economics of buying it more than in most games. This guide explains what aUEC is, what the Terms of Service say and why third-party sales are unusually poor value.
What aUEC is
aUEC is earned by playing — hauling cargo, trading, bounty hunting, salvage, mining and mission work — and spent on ships, gear and services in the persistent universe. It is separate from UEC, which is real-money store credit, and from REC, the rental currency used in Arena Commander. Because the game is in development, missions and rewards are reputation-gated: you unlock the better-paying work by playing, which is part of why progression feels slow. Our Star Citizen aUEC farming guide covers current earning loops.
Wipes and the license model
The Terms of Service treat in-game items and currency as virtual goods that you do not own: you receive a limited license to use them, they cannot be redeemed for money from the company, and they can be reset during development. The terms also caution against obtaining virtual goods through secondary or “grey” markets because fraud is frequent, according to summaries of those terms. In practical terms, aUEC you buy can disappear at a patch with no compensation, whether or not you bought it legitimately.
What the Rules of Conduct prohibit
According to summaries of the terms, the Rules of Conduct bar exploiting the game to gather virtual goods for sale outside it, performing in-game services for payment outside the game (such as power-leveling), posting to trade or sell virtual goods such as ships, insurance benefits or game credits, including on third-party sites, and selling or transferring your RSI account. Read the current terms directly at Cloud Imperium's site for the exact wording.
Enforcement
Reports describe Cloud Imperium banning hundreds of accounts in June 2024 and again in July 2025 for exploits such as duplication. Duplicated currency is a recognized route into the secondary market, so aUEC sold cheaply may not have been earned. These figures come from community news coverage rather than an official ledger, so treat them as indicative.
Risks specific to Star Citizen
- Wipes. The alpha can wipe balances at any patch.
- Duplicated currency. Cheap supply may come from exploits that Cloud Imperium bans.
- Account risk. Account sales are prohibited, and your RSI account may hold expensive pledges.
Earning instead of buying
Match a loop to your ship and reputation: hauling and trading for steady income, bounty work and salvage mid-tier, and mining or specialist contracts once you have the capital. Our Currency Calculator values your hourly aUEC, and the leveling guide covers early progression.
If you decide to buy from a third party
We cannot make a purchase compliant with the Terms of Service, and given wipes we would advise against spending real money on aUEC. If you go ahead, never share your RSI login, protect your account with two-factor authentication, use a payment with dispute rights and read our Star Citizen buying guide and safety guides.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to buy aUEC and ship packages from these sites?
This page lists 16 reviewed sellers for Star Citizen, and each one has its own MMODude review covering delivery speed, customer support, pricing and trust. The highest-rated is CoinLooting at 4.9/5. Boosthive scores under 4.0 and carries a Caution label, so read its review before ordering. Whichever you pick, start with a small first order and pay through the seller’s own checkout.
What's the difference between aUEC sellers, account sellers and training services?
This page lists 8 auec sellers, 5 account & ship package sellers and 5 training & escort services. aUEC sellers deliver in-game currency for ship purchases and gear. Account sellers sell CCU-upgraded accounts or exclusive concept ship packages. Training and escort services have an experienced pilot help you directly in-game on your own account.
