Key points
- Malwarebytes found a fake “VIP early access” shop charging $250 in Bitcoin, USDT or Ethereum for a game that does not exist yet.
- Kaspersky told Tom’s Guide the most common scheme is a cloned pre-order page, found in several languages, that takes card and personal details.
- Fake “beta” and “leaked build” downloads install malware; Rockstar has announced no beta.
- GTA 6 is listed only for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Any PC, PS4, Xbox One or mobile copy on sale today is fake, and so is any GTA 6 money or account.
What researchers have found
Malwarebytes’ Stefan Dasic described the first wave on June 23, two days before official pre-orders opened: polished sites using GTA 6 art and AI-made images, selling “early access” for $250 and taking only cryptocurrency. After paying, the buyer is asked for a transaction ID to “unlock” a download that never arrives. Crypto payments cannot be charged back, which is why the sites insist on them. Dasic said any site claiming to sell early access should be treated as fraudulent unless Rockstar announces it through its own channels.
In July, Kaspersky described a wider set of schemes to Tom’s Guide: fake pre-order pages copying Rockstar’s trailers and branding for PS5 and Xbox, video “tutorials” that claim to show how to get the game, a “beta” framed as a leak and promoted on social and streaming platforms that installs malware when opened, and crypto tokens trading on the GTA 6 name.
The launch-week risks
A September roundup by MalwareTips lists what to expect as launch gets close: discounted “Ultimate Edition” keys from unknown shops, fake preload and launcher files that steal passwords and wallets, phishing sign-in pages for Rockstar, PlayStation and Xbox accounts (some using QR codes that link the scammer’s device), fake support agents asking for codes or a “verification” payment, and boosting or “free money” offers that ask for your login. It also points out that boxed copies hold a download code instead of a disc, which makes fake code cards easier to pass off.
The official facts are short. Pre-orders opened on June 25 through the PlayStation Store, the Xbox Store, the Rockstar Store and selected retailers. Preloading starts November 12 and the game launches November 19, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only.
What it means for buyers
There is nothing legitimate to buy from a third party yet. No one can sell GTA 6 money, a levelled account or a modded account before the game is out, and Rockstar has not said whether GTA 6 will have an online mode at launch. Any listing for those today is a scam or a placeholder taking deposits. Our GTA 6 launch-week buying guide lists the safe ways to buy the game and the red flags to check, and the GTA 6 page has the countdown and launch facts.
