Dota 2 Items and Accounts: Valve's Rules and Trade Bans
Dota 2's items live in the Steam inventory, so Valve's Steam Subscriber Agreement and trade enforcement govern them. The third-party market here is items, accounts and rank boosting, and Valve has clear rules on the account side.
How the economy works
Dota 2 has no in-game gold to sell. Items and cosmetics are earned or purchased, then traded or sold through Steam's systems, including the Steam Community Market, which lets tradable items be sold for Steam Wallet funds. Our Dota 2 items and progression guide covers legitimate ways to earn items and the leveling guide covers getting started.
What the Steam Subscriber Agreement says
The Steam Subscriber Agreement states that you may not sell or charge others for the right to use your account, or otherwise transfer your account, nor sell or transfer subscriptions except as the agreement allows. Steam accounts are licensed, not owned, and the license is non-transferable and for personal use. Sharing your password or letting others use the account is not allowed.
Trade enforcement
Steam players report trade bans, temporary or permanent, for receiving items from third-party sites that turned out to be scammed, stolen or fraudulently obtained; the pattern is that you are responsible for items you accept, and fraudulent items can be removed without refund. Valve does not support outside trading sites, so use of them is at your own risk. An account flagged for terms violations can lose the ability to trade, use the Market and activate keys, and Steam restrictions can be permanent.
Buying an account or boosting
Accounts are tied to a Steam login, which makes purchases particularly vulnerable: the original owner can recover the account through Steam, and a purchased account can inherit any prior restrictions. Rank boosting requires logging in to your account and is account sharing. VAC bans and Dota 2 behavior restrictions apply to the account regardless of who played it.
Safer options
- Use the Steam Market and official trades with Steam Guard confirmations.
- Earn items through the methods in our farming guide.
- Improve rank yourself. Coaching sessions where you play your own account are ordinary play.
If you decide to buy from a third party
We cannot make a purchase compliant with Valve's agreement, and we don't encourage breaking it. If you go ahead, never share your Steam login, keep Steam Guard Mobile on and confirm every trade there, use a payment with dispute rights and read our Dota 2 buying guide and safety guides.
