MapleStory Mesos: Nexon's Rules and the Auction House
MapleStory's economy runs on mesos, with an in-game Auction House for trading items, and Nexon's stance on real-money trading has been public for years. This guide summarizes what the rules and enforcement notices say.
How mesos move
Mesos come from monsters, bosses, selling items and daily and weekly content, and are spent on gear upgrades, enhancement and the Auction House. Because trading is a core part of progression, players constantly exchange items and mesos. Our MapleStory mesos farming guide covers the efficient sources, and the leveling guide covers early progression.
What Nexon's rules say
Nexon's code of conduct prohibits exploiting the game for any commercial purpose, including the buying or selling of accounts, NX or in-game items, and the provision of power-leveling services. Moderators on the official forums have reiterated that buying and selling in-game items for real money is not allowed and that “everyone is doing it” is not a defense. Regional pages for other MapleStory services, such as MapleSEA, list buying or selling in-game currency for monetary value as an offense, and treat even shorthand like RMT or currency symbols in advertisements as suspicious.
Enforcement notices
Nexon has published real-money-trading enforcement updates, including one that said players found to have received large quantities of illicitly gained mesos or items from farmers would face sanctions. That wording worried players who could not tell whether a trade partner was a farmer, which is the point: receiving mesos of unknown origin is itself a risk. Nexon's banning guidelines list hacking and botting among the offenses and say bans range from three days up to permanent, at a game master's discretion.
Practical risks
- Origin of mesos. Mesos sold in bulk typically come from farming networks, which Nexon targets.
- Scams outside the game. Community discussions note that Nexon does not protect players in off-platform meso deals, so there is no recourse if the other side does not keep the bargain.
- Trade restrictions. Nexon applies temporary trade restrictions in some circumstances, described in its support pages.
Safer ways to get mesos
Use the Auction House for item-for-meso trades within the game, and earn mesos through boss runs and daily content. The Currency Calculator converts your hourly mesos to a dollar figure so you can weigh routes against each other.
If you decide to buy from a third party
We cannot make a purchase compliant with Nexon's rules, and we don't encourage breaking them. If you go ahead, never share your login, avoid large lump sums, use a payment with dispute rights and read our MapleStory buying guide and safety guides.
