Star Conflict Shuts Down After 14 Years, Community Edition Takes Over

Star Gem and Gaijin’s free-to-play MMO space shooter closed its official servers on October 9, 2026 — a day earlier than announced, so the free Community Edition for player-run servers could ship sooner.

Key points

  • Official servers shut down October 9, 2026 at 10:00 GMT — moved up a day from October 10 — and the official forum closed October 8. New registrations had been disabled May 14 and monetization switched off June 1.
  • The free Community Edition followed on Steam, shipping the client and server software so players can run their own servers — with modes, matchmaking, chat, corporations, achievements, tournaments and the economy, though some features may differ.
  • The farewell letter counts 14 years, 97,717,550 battles, 29,653,666 hours played, 4.3 million unique accounts, 311 ships and 90 locations.
  • The stated reasons: technical limitations, rising infrastructure costs and a declining active player base.

The shutdown

Star Conflict’s official servers went dark on October 9, 2026, at 10:00 GMT — one day earlier than the October 10 date in the original announcement, moved up, in the official schedule post’s words, “to provide players with the Community Edition as soon as possible.” The official forum had closed the day before, on October 8. The wind-down had been running for months: new registrations were disabled on May 14, 2026, and in-game monetization was switched off on June 1. The game itself dated back to an open beta on July 24, 2012, a Steam release in February 2013, and version 1.0 in September 2014 — developed by Star Gem and published by Gaijin Entertainment.

The Community Edition

The afterlife is official, not a fan hack: after the shutdown, Star Gem released the free Community Edition on Steam, shipping the client and server software so players can run their own servers. Coverage of the release describes all modes, matchmaking, chat, corporations, achievements, tournaments and the economy coming with it, with the caveat that some features and modes may differ from the official service. It is the rare shutdown that ends with the game still playable — on servers its own players run.

The lifetime numbers

The farewell letter’s own accounting: 5,294 days since the first closed-beta battles, 97,717,550 battles fought, 29,653,666 hours played — more than 3,380 years — 4.3 million unique accounts created, and 170+ updates adding 311 ships and 90 locations. The official announcement’s reason for the end was plain: technical limitations, rising infrastructure costs and a declining active player base.

What it means for buyers

There is no reviewed Star Conflict market to buy from, by design: the official servers are gone, and a purchase of Galactic Standards, ships or accounts for them would pay for currency and progress in a service that ended October 9, 2026. G2G category pages for the game still turn up in search, but they are stale legacy traces with stock and deliverability unverified — and nothing bought there can be delivered to an official server. On player-run Community Edition servers, the rules are the server operator’s, not a marketplace’s.
